Bonnets in Scarborough

When at the seaside it is tempting to just pop into the nearest cafe or restaurant, when you want a meal.
We always find the experience is much more enjoyable if you can find somewhere that the locals frequent.
The chances are that the food and ambiance will be much better than the rows of near identical cafes arranged along the front.
In Scarborough a few days ago we stumbled across Bonnet's, in Huntriss Row, which is set just a couple of streets from both the sea and also the main shopping street. Huntriss Row is a traffic free pedestrian area.
Bonnet's is situated over two floors with self - service on the ground floor and waitress service on the first floor. There is also an outside area for those seeking the al fresco dining experience.
The menu offers a wide choice. Savoury dishes, e.g. Scrambled egg with Smoked Salmon on Toast - Jacket Potatoes - Pastas - Pie of the Day -Fish - Omelettes - Baguettes -Sandwiches - Salads. Scones and Tea Cakes are also offered for a lighter snack.
They are also licensed, offering House wine and beer & lager.
Reassuringly they list, in the menu, their main sources for meat and fish.
The service was quick, efficient and friendly. Everything is reasonably priced.
A measure of the restaurant is that my Jacket Potato, with Smoked Salmon & Prawns, came with the sauce in a separate dish, rather than being smothered over everything on the plate, a practice common in many establishments.
Bonnet's must be doing something right because it was first established in 1880, by a Swiss Confectioner Louis Bonnet, and has now been in the Fairbank family since 1959.
We will certainly be going back again the next time we visit Scarborough.

Thanks Mike - a great review, and it sounds like a great place!
I agree it can be well worth the little extra effort involved in going a little further afield to find the best hidden gems.
