We visit this popular bay along the Yorkshire Coast. A favourite spot with surfers and holidaymakers alike...
The 'Unofficial Guide' tells you more...
We spent a lovely morning walking with the dog at Cayton Bay beach.
This is a lovely, quiet bay, very popular with surfers, located in between Scarborough and Filey.
We went in November, so it was quite cold, but there were still plenty of surfers out having fun in the waves.
We parked at the Surf Shop, where there is access down to the beach.
Pay on entry for parking:
£2 all day
£1 after 4pm
Park in the field - it was a bit wet and boggy in November!
Also here:
Toilets (at the back of the surf shop)
Changing Booths (at the back of the surf shop)
Surf Equipment hire and training
Simple Refreshments
Also access to public footpaths - The Cleveland Way - leading south towards Filey and north through National Trust wodland, towards Scarborough
It is quite a steep slope down to the beach, via a path (and even steeper back up!)
There are open metal steps down to the beach - our dog wouldn't walk on these, so we had to send him to scramble down a very muddy and slippery bank instead...
...he refused to walk up the steps again either on the way back up! ...so scrambled up the muddy bank again... which meant we all got muddy!
This is a nice, quiet, enclosed bay - very pretty, with a flat expanse of sand, and 2 concrete coastal defence bunkers - one decorated with colourful graffiti artwork.
There were lots of surfers on the beach, and in the waves.
Great views of Scarborough Castle and the headland in the distance.
We had a lovely, long walk along the beach, and the dog had a lovely run along the sands...
It started raining quite heavily all of a sudden - which meant us, and most of the surfers, made a swift and steep exodus back up the hill to the carpark...
...ending up back at the car rather exhausted, drenched and muddy - but feeling exhilerated - and we did have a lovely time!
We really liked Cayton Bay - and would come again - but probably not with the dog, owing to the difficulties he had with the steps - he is a greyhound, a breed which tends to struggle with steps at the best of times! (...they haven't got the right kind of legs!)...
...so other breeds of dogs may fare better - we did see quite a number of different dogs on the beach!
