Walk from Danby Visitors Centre - Clitherbeck Walk
Enjoy the beautiful North York Moors with an easy walk from the Danby Moors Centre around the valley and moors of Clitherbeck. Our walk report and photos....
We did a very enjoyable walk from the Moors Centre at Danby.
We found this walk in a small pamphlet/book which we bought from the Moors centre, costing just £1.90 (correct at the time of our visit - March 2010) 'Walks from The Moors Centre'. We found the map and directions very easy to follow...
The walk is an attractive, short walk, down to a pretty stream (Clither beck) and then up onto the moors, before returning downhill to the Centre.
There is a short climb through the woods, to start, and a longer, steeper climb up onto the moorland, otherwise the way is flat, or downhill.
It is a 2 mile walk, which should take you up to an hour.
We really enjoyed this walk for the variety of attractive scenery, and some really stunning views from the moor top!
Danby Visitors Centre - Clitherbeck Walk
Start the walk from the car park at the Moors Centre.
Turn up the hill, and continue upwards through woodland, where you see the footpath signposted.
This is just a short climb, then you proceed downwards through a bracken-filled field, towards Clitherbeck stream.
Already some great views across and down the valley!
Cross the beck - this is a really pretty spot, with the river burbling. When we visited we still saw big icicles hanging dramatically to the river bank.
The riverbank was quite boggy underfoot, but a lovely, attractive area, with hardy moorland grasses, rising dramatically to the moor.
Climb the hill with the stone wall on your right - its quite steep - but keep going - the views just get better and better!
High up on the hill you can see the distinctive mounds where coal was mined in the 18th Century.
We also spotted the steam train puffing away in the valley (Esk Valley line)
As you approach the top of the moorland, follow the stone wall round to the right, again enjoy the fantastic views across the valleys - it was still very icy up here, when we went.
As you reach the road, turn right and go downhill to return to the Moors Centre.
We stopped off to say hello to a large and friendly horse, over a gate!
This was a great walk, with a wonderful taste of the moors, and breath-taking views (...or was that the steep climb!!)
I look forward to trying out some more from the booklet....
