Day trip to Withernsea

by Gareth Leasley
(Sheffield)

Me and my partner went to Withernsea the other day and I couldn't believe what I saw there.

Nothing to do, everywhere closed and people so suspicious of everyone else, I felt I would be robbed on the spot.

There is nothing to do there and the beach was appalling.

We finally found a fish and chip shop that was open, Chip-Munks on High Brighton Street. We had to wait 15 mins for them to cook the food. Burnt chips and burnt and over greasy fish. Almost inedible.

Least to say we will not be returning.

A waste of a trip.

Hi Gareth

I'm sorry to hear about your unenjoyable visit to Withernsea. What a shame!

I hope it doesn't put you off trying another bit of the Yorkshire coast though - we've got some very lovely things to see here, and lots to do, too!

What do other people think of Gareth's comments?

Is Withernsea really as bad as all that?

Have you been there? Do you live there? What do you think of Withernsea? What's it really like?

Here's a great chance for you to tell us what you think...

Try Filey - lovely beaches, friendly people, fish and chips to die for - lots of cafes for coffees.

Withernsea is not so bad!
by: Rob Clay

My partner and I have just returned from a holiday in Withernsea, and have to say that it's better than we were expecting.

We knew it wasn't going to be a place to want to spend a week in, but it's great as a base to tour other places, if a bit off the beaten track.

We chose Withernsea because so long as you avoid the main 'front', you can take dogs on the beach and watch them play in the sea and on the beach.

I think dogs and beaches go together, but most major resorts now ban all dogs under pain of a hefty fine.

I think the resorts are shooting themselves in the foot with this idea. Years ago, people were less responsible for their dogs, and didn't clean up after them, so you can understand people not wanting to sunbathe near dog poo. However, I think the real dog lovers in our country are the ones who *are* responsible, and want to take their dogs with them on holiday, and not shut them up in a prison (kennels) for a week while they go off and enjoy themselves.

Dogs live in the moment, and as far as they are concerned, they don't know you are coming back, and think the kennel is to be their new home. If your dog is a part of your family, why would you want to imprison them for a week with new people and a cacophony of yelping, barking strange dogs? I couldn't do it to our pooch Boo.

Personally, we stayed at Withernsea Sands, and found the caravan in good, clean condition, with all mod cons.

It was nice and quiet, which is often not the case with most family sites. The town is suffering like most British seaside towns, and so can seem a bit lacklustre and dated, but it's the way things are nowadays.

The beach is clean and sandy, and there is a reasonable sized Tesco in the town, so getting provisions was not a problem either.

All the major resorts are at least a good hour's drive away, but if you want a quiet getaway on the Yorkshire coast, I'd recommend it.

Thanks for the feedback!
by: Charlotte

Thanks for the feedback, Rob.

Glad you had a good holiday - Withernsea does have a different feel to it than the main Yorkshire coast resorts, and is certainly well off the beaten track...

I think its very isolation, gives it its own unique feel, as a town.

We found the town to be friendly - and the beach was beautiful - it meets the Marine Conservation Society 'Excellent' or 'Recommended' standard for clean water (May 2011 results)

Gorgeous countryside all around - and it's not too far from there to the windswept Spurn Point, with it's nature reserve.

Like you say, if you're prepared to drive about a bit you can use Withernsea as a base for exploring the region.

If the weather's not fine for sitting on the beach every day, you might struggle to find enough to do in the town for a whole week, though!

Glad Boo enjoyed the break too - what a lovely looking dog! Looks like fun was had by all!

Hope you'll come back and visit us on the Yorkshire coast soon - and maybe even Withernsea?

Thanks very much for sharing your Withernsea review...

Ups and Downs of our holiday
by: Rob Clay

We were meant to have been at Withernsea until Saturday, but after a great morning at Spurn Point with my partner and Boo, we stopped off at Withernsea Tesco to get some bread and milk only to have my bank card refused.

I phoned my Nationwide bank, and the silly girl who answered told me I had no unusual amounts taken out, but that I was £900 overdrawn!

Without internet access, and the nearest Nationwide somewhere in Hull, it all seemed too much trouble to try to sort out there, so we packed up and left for home, feeling miserable after having a great few days there.

On returning home and checking my account myself, I found I'd had two fraudulent withdrawals totalling £1800!

I have been to my branch today to get them started on sorting it out, but it brought our holiday to an abrupt end.

Luckily, we had had a long and busy day on Tuesday, determined to make the most of the weather.

We went across the moors to Goathland, on to Staithes, then Whitby and the Abbey, then on to Robin Hoods Bay at teatime, and finished with a stroll on the front at Scarborough before returning down the wiggly road to Withernsea, tired but happy.

We had covered 170 miles in a day, but it was worth it.

As a previous visitor to Yorkshire, I would also recommend a day at Castle Howard where they filmed 'Brideshead Revisited', and of course, York itself, where you can stroll through the old part of town, and also take a visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre and York Dungeon.

Sad news but lovely places...
by: Charlotte

Oh Rob - what a shame your holiday had to come to an abrupt close - and how awful about your bank account - I do hope you can get that sorted quickly!

Wow - 170 miles round trip along the Yorkshire coast - you must have seen some sights that day! All lovely, lovely places that you visited - a great itinerary!

I couldn't agree more with you about the great Yorkshire places to visit - I love Castle Howard too - you can read about our most recent visit there, here...

York is certainly a must-visit too - we lived and worked in York for many years (Ian still works there) so we know it well, and love it too - in fact I'll be starting another website, similar to this, all about York, in late Summer/Autumn, so I hope to bring you lots of York days out and things to do and places to go, eat and stay, very soon!

Thanks very much for sharing your Yorkshire coast experiences, Gareth, and do hope you'll get your account sorted, and your money back, soon.

Best wishes

Charlotte

Woeful Witherensea / don't go
by: Anonymous

Been to Witherensea today & whilst the front is pretty & clean, we will not return. Not sure what was going on but at the lighthouse, walking through town & on the sea front we were plagued by a constant swarm of hornets, not sure if there is some kind of infestation in Witherensea at the mo.

Also my little one played in the sea, as they do which I thought looked a tad too brown & its stained all of his clothes he had on today, I've boil washed them twice & they're ruined, we've been to many beaches and never had this before.

Also we are dog owners but dont take our dogs in the summer as I dont believe it mixes well with kids and hygiene, to say the signs said no dogs there were at least 6 on there today, so not sure what that's all about.

Finally, I went back to my car & overheard locals talking as I changed my shoes who were saying its not a safe place and they don't let their kids near the town on their own, not very inspiring & even less so when I saw and heard the behaviour of groups of teenagers on the beach.

Been from the East Riding all my life, I must say I am disappointed & wont return!!!'

Withernsea
by: Anonymous

The town itself has loads to do during the summer holidays, it's a shame it's the same every single year - that's all the Withernsea council knows.

The problem with the place is that the town needs some money put into it and sadly because it used to be an excellent holiday town the council still try and make it so.

But the reality is that the highest percentage of population of withernsea is the elderly.

And there is a hell of alot of meth getting pumped through, thats why there are three chemists in one little town and they get deliveries of meth twice a week.

Plus last year there was a survey of all the Tesco stores in England and apparently the one in Withernsea had the highest alcohol sales.

Doesn't really say alot but all to do is drink take drugs and gamble in the muggies.

Don't let that stop you coming though, there is always good with the bad...

5 star cafes and 1 star take aways

A massive park which was redone last year but I found human poo at the top of the slide once.

A beach, its ok at about 5pm on a hot day - the sand looks the right colour any ways.

Amusement arcades, there is soomething for everyone. Big spending and a bar and bingo for the adults and a soft play, golf and bowling for the kids, just gets swarmed with teens now and again.... but the teens are harmless as long as you dont start on them....

Withernsea Comments
by: Anonymous

I think as far as the sea being brown - it could be to do with the storms last week - it stirs the sand up with the seas being choppy and I've had sand staining my clothes like that at the beach before (not Withernsea) - especially if it's wet.

Withernsea is meant to be one of the cleanest beaches - it's got the top 'recommendation' for cleanliness from the Good Beach Guide

Click here to see (based on 2010)

We had a load of hornets at home last week too.

I think a lot of towns (seaside and otherwise) are suffering with the recession, and Withernsea seems to have been hit quite hard - but even holiday spots have their bad points, and, as the last commenter points out, Withernsea is still a nice town and there are still many good points and things to enjoy and entertain you...

I've not been for a while, but I do really like the nice long beach there - and being recommended as clean by the Good Beach Guide can only help - so long as dog owners keep their dogs off the main part of the beach in the main summer season...

AND clean up after their dogs - a few irresponsible dog owners can soon give all dog owners a bad name - and busy beaches and dogs don't mix well I feel!

Dogs Allowed
by: Charlotte

Thanks everyone for your comments.

To check where and when dogs are allowed on Withernsea (and other) beaches - check out my Dogs Allowed page

Most resorts have dogs banned during the main Summer season only (May-Sept usually) and often from only the central portion of beach.

Do check updated terms with the councils before you set out and obey any signage at the resorts themselves.

Thanks everyone for sharing your Withernsea experiences....

Withernsea
by: Anonymous

My Husband and I have purchased a fully accessible wheelchair friendly static caravan and placed it on Withernsea sands resort. The staff on the park have been friendly and helpful. The site is clean and well kept, children can play safely.

My Husband has M/S and is severly disabled ,I have Rheumatoid Athritis we have found the level access promanade wonderful walking from just outside the site as far as the lifeboat base.

Vince can also in his power chair drive down the ramp to the beach and feel part of the family enjoying watching the granchildren play happily on the sand. Yes the sea does look brown but it was quite a rough tide whipping up the sand, the kids enjoyed jumping the waves. The beach was quite empty. It is a shame that families do not seem to play beach games together. I guess kids enjoy playing the wi indoors.

The Lighthouse is also accessible via a side door to the rear. This entrance could be signposted more clearly. The staff at the tourist information were very helpful and friendly.

We made a mental note of the parking and again there seemed to be ample near both the beach and the shops.

We havent found the people to be unfriendly the opposite we have been treated with courtesy and respect and have certainly never felt threatened by youths.

Finally Thursday evening after a hard day in the office my friend and I visited Withernsea (I wanted to show off our caravan) we went paddling in the sea at seven oclock in the evening. Two fifty somethings acting like over grown kids! We loved it.

We then walked to the Golden Haddock for a delicious fish supper - at no time did we feel afraid for our safety in fact I was surprised to read on this site that someone had felt uneasy.

Paddling fun...!
by: Charlotte

Thank you very much for your comments in support of Withernsea - plus your very useful and helpful remarks on accessibility - I'm sure that lots of other readers will find that of use, too.

The seafront and beach at Withernsea are both lovely to visit, very attractive - and like you we didn't feel threatened or uneasy when we visited.

So glad you've got a new static caravan based at Withernsea :) hope you get lots of lovely sunny weather to enjoy it!

We, too, enjoyed fish and chips at The Golden Haddock

Hope you have lots more trips to Withernsea and lots more evenings paddling in the sea.

Enjoy your caravan and your relaxation time there!
