Disabled Access

by Dianne

As an elderly disabled (walking) person who loves the beach I would like to see more information on how easy it is to walk onto the beach and how far away the parking is, I find that very few web site tell me this.

We have spent this summer visiting Yorkshire beaches only to find when we got there I could not get onto the beach beacuse of steep steps or a cliff climb, if anyone has information on this I would really appreciate it.

Accessible Beaches
by: Charlotte

Thank you, Dianne, for your comments - you make some good points.

I will try and incorporate such observations in future reviews.

I'm trying to think which beaches have easy access (no steps or scrambles) and at the moment I can think of Filey, which, as I recall, has slopes down to the beach, although somewhat cobbley, which may affect wheelchair access, if required, or sure-footed walking. This is at the Brigg end, and there is a small amount of parking nearby.

It is always difficult to recommend beaches without knowing a particular person's precise capabilities. And from memory it can be difficult to recall if there are steps...

The Bridlington South Beach may also be a possible (south of the harbour - street parking if not too busy - long slopes down, but there may be steps too, though, to access the actual beach itself!)

There is also access to the beach from the Park and Ride in Bridlington, but I could not say whether this is suitable - from what I recall it's quite a sandy slope or steps, but this may have changed since the Park and Ride opened.

And I think the main beach at Whitby can be accessed via a slope (again somewhat cobbley, I believe) at the pier end - although parking may be a way away for you.

Sandsend beach is pretty much level with the street, and parking is nearby, but I don't recall whether there are any steps or not.

Fraisthorpe has beach-side parking, but, although not steep, or with steps, may have unstable surfaces and somewhat of a short scramble to access the beach.

I found the page, below, with disabled/accessible attractions and facilities listed, which might be useful for you...

Also visit this useful page...

...as well as this one...

I wonder if the Tourist Information Offices, and/or the Councils may also be able to advise you on which beaches are easily accessible for your needs, if they hold such information.

Please do check with them, on available facilities and accessibility, before setting out to visit any suggestions on this page, as I speak just from memory, which may be incorrect, and I would not like you to have another disappointing trip!

Thanks very much for raising some useful points, Dianne. I do hope you can find some nice, and accessible beaches to enjoy.

Do let us know which ones you've tried, and how they scored.

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations that could help Dianne, and other readers who have difficulty getting about?

Thanks

Charlotte

Some suggestions from Mike...
by: Charlotte

Reader, Mike, suggests Scarborough, and Withernsea central beach, which has a ramp.

I can't believe I forgot about Scarborough beach - this, too, is level with the street, and is easy to access.

If you can get parked on the seafront (which is possible when it's not too busy) it's not too far to walk, either.

Thanks for your suggestions, Mike :)

If anyone has any more, keep them coming....

Thanks.

Disabled access
by: Dianne

Thank you for your help I am very grateful for your input. I fell in love with Mappleton and going down to the beach was okay but coming back the road was slippy with sand and it took 3 others to get me up, well we did laugh a lot which didn't help !

Withernsea/Filey/Hornsea are great, we are going to Barmston & Fraisthorpe this weekend so I will let you know how I get on there, again thank you very much.

Thanks!
by: Charlotte

Thanks very much for your reply, Dianne.

Glad you've found some accessible beaches that are good for you. And glad you've got some fun helpers too! I think a laugh definitely helps, rather than not! :o)

I do hope you find the access at Fraisthorpe is suitable, as it's a lovely beach.

(You can pull in by the toilets, they are just before you get to the car park - on the left, almost opposite the caravan site entrance, but a tiny bit further on. There's a bit of a layby there, rather than have to walk back to them, once you've parked.)

It's the same beach as at Barmston, actually, just a little further along, although I haven't accessed it from Barmston, yet.

Do let us know how you get on. Good luck!

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)

Fraisthorpe/Barmston beach
by: Dianne

Oh I see why Fraisthorpe is your favorite beach, I love Fraisthorpe and I think its the best beach I have ever seen in the world, I could not get on either beach but I would go again just for the view and the people watching, both beaches are amazing!

Barmston was very busy last bank holiday Sunday with all water sports going on and that I watched for 2 hours, took photographs, drove onto Hornsea and sat on the beach there.

Thank you for your recomending these beaches.

Thanks for your feedback
by: Charlotte

Hello Dianne

Thank you very much for your feedback, and for letting us know how you got on - so sorry you couldn't access the beaches themselves but glad you enjoyed them none the less...

I've certainly seen people at Fraisthorpe sitting and picnicking with their deckchairs in the clifftop car park, enjoying the view - and it is a great view!

Just don't get too close to the edge! ...the cliffs are quite crumbly there!

We've even just gone to sit there in the wet and the rain and enjoy the view - in the car, of course! ...and even more so when we used to have our little camper van :)

Please do let us know how you get on, on any other beaches you may try out along the Yorkshire coast - the information will be incredibly useful for anyone else with similar accessibility problems, and I thank you very much for your kindness in sharing it.

Hoping for lots more sunny days by the sea :)

Thanks

Charlotte :)
