We review ideas for eating in Whitby - we had a lovely lunch at Monks Haven Cafe and Restaurant on the east side of town. Read on to find out what we thought...
We stopped for lunch at Monks Haven - a charming, olde-worlde style tea-room and restaurant.
This Whitby restaurant and cafe has a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere - wtih simple decor, a beamed ceiling and farmhouse style tables and chairs, and with smart railway posters on the walls.
Monks Haven is actually one of the oldest buildings in Whitby, with parts dating back to the 12th Century.
It is right in the heart of old Whitby, on the east side of town, right next to the Market Square.
Monks Haven even has its own late night ghost - George!
On the day we visited, the cafe was quite quiet, as the Swing Bridge between the east and west sides of town was closed (broken) - so the whole of the east side was quite quiet - I guess the cafe is normally a lot busier!
Monks Haven Whitby restaurant and tea room is open for day time eating in Whitby, for coffees, teas and lunches, and also opens during the evenings Fridays and Saturdays for evening meals.

We only fancied a light lunch, so I had a tuna and mayonnaise jacket potato, which came with a small side salad.
Ian asked for a crab baguette - but there was no crab available - the chef had actually been to the supplier to check - which we were very impressed by - again, I think this must have been related to the bridge closure.
Instead, Ian had a prawn and salmon baguette which was very large - lovely and fresh and very tasty, says Ian.
The food came quite quickly, and the staff were efficient, friendly and polite.
Newspapers were available to read (to be returned after use).
There is also a further dining room set out upstairs, with tables and chairs, which can offer a quieter dining experience.
The toilets are also upstairs.
Monks Haven Whitby restaurant and tea room offers good eating in Whitby - a nice, central location, tasty food, good service, and a comfortable, relaxed feel.
We would definitely call in again!
