Moon and Sixpence, Whitby

by Anne Macleod
(Isle of Skye)

I love this place and have now visited several times, for me I think the view does it - the first time me and my partner visited we were seated at the window in the bar, it was a misty moody night and the Abbey was lit up with the most wonderful reflections, very romantic!

The food is always beautifully presented, service excellent and great value for money.

Hi Anne

Thank you very much for your review. We love the Moon and Sixpence too - and yes, the view is stunning!

And even more spectacular at night, when the Abbey is all lit up, I expect!

We've only stopped for a drink here, but would love to have something to eat here, too!

You can read our review of the Moon and Sixpence, here... - it's truly a lovely little spot!

Thanks very much for sharing your Whitby eating out experiences!

Charlotte

PS - We had a truly wonderful holiday in Skye - a gorgeous little cottage and stunning scenery - and weather! You're so lucky living there! :o)

Graveley's - disappointment

by Pauline Spray
(Chesterfield)

Visited Graveley's restaurant at Whitby yesterday (20th May 2011) after reading Charlotte's review.

The restaurant is situated in a lovely spot with lovely views. Unfortunately, the food was not so lovely!

The Senior's special finished at 5pm - but not mentioned in the menu. The chips were 'overdone' and the portions generally were very small.

We were not offered vegetables with the food or a jug of water as other people seemed to be offered.

We were not allowed to sit at a window seat, despite there being several empty tables. We were told they were 'reserved', but some remained empty for the whole of our stay.

Finally, the prices are ridiculously high.

We have had much better food, better service and an all-round better experience from 'The Quarterdeck', which is just around the corner.

What a disappointment.

Hello Pauline

Oh, such a shame that you didn't have a good experience at Graveleys!

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences, though, so I can add a full range of eating experiences to my website...

And very glad you found a lovely spot at 'The Quarterdeck' instead - I haven't been there, so we'll have to give it a go sometime...

Thanks very much for sharing your experiences of your meal at Graveleys....

And I hope you still enjoyed your trip to Whitby!

Best wishes

Charlotte

Alexander's ~ Whitby

You can't beat Alexander's Fish and Chip restaurant, we go there every visit - lovely welcome and not only do they serve huge fish and chips, they've other other things on the menu, too.

Bread and butter included in the price and tea and coffee. Children get a drink with their meal also, and his prices haven't changed from last year.

Definitely worth the visit, we don't go anywhwhere else!

'Robertsons' & 'Marine', Whitby

by Gareth
(Lancs)

Well, due to my dietary requirements I can't have Fish & Chips which are cooked in dripping...

...we usually go to a place called Robertsons on the south side of the harbour on the left just past the old shambles and the Toymaster shop.

They use veg oil, but their fish & chips are still great. However they were closed last Friday.

Ended up going to the Marine which is by the fish quays on the corner opposite the gypsy cabin, looks a very trendy wine bar as it has a pianist, fish & chips were great, chunky chips, homemade mushy peas very good value and pleasantly surprised, would go there again!

At Marine it was £6.50 for what they called small cod or haddock, chips, home made mushy peas and tartare sauce.

The portion was just right didn't feel too bloated, my dad had the large cod at £9.50 and he was stuffed.

Despite the upmarket feel, there were 10 of us including 4 children all under 10 and we felt very welcome, the most important bit for me was that they also used veg oil.

The piano player gave nice relaxing feel to the place, despite the usual stresses if eating out with young children!

Robertsons is still worth a visit as well.

I hope this helps!

Gareth

Thank you Gareth.

Yes I know where you mean - that's very useful to know - especially about the veg oil, which I'm sure will be helpful for many other visitors to the website too.

We'll have to check it out sometime

Thanks a lot for your reviews :o)

Becketts coffee shop in Whitby

by Anne
(Isle of Skye / Doncaster)

Spend a lovely Sunday in Whitby last week and made a new discovery, had a lovely coffee and tea cake in Becketts on Skinner street, it's a coffee shop but is crammed full of books to browse or to buy, had a lovely atmosphere, and if you're a dog owner, they are welcome as well.

Thank you very much for your review, Anne. Glad to hear you've found such a lovely place - Beckett's does get lots of good reviews here, especially from dog owners...

(You can see some of the reviews on this dog friendly eating out reviews page here...)

I've still not been in, but did peep through the window last time we went past - it was a bit busy so we didn't go in - but I'm very tempted...

...and now you've told me about the books, even more so! I'm a bit of a book-a-holic!

It does sound lovely!

Thanks very much for sharing! And wishing you many more happy trips to Whitby :)

(PS Say hello to lovely Skye from me and Ian) :)

Victoria Garden Centre, Whitby

by Charlotte
(East Yorks)

We ate our meal on the outskirts of Whitby, at the Victoria Garden centre

The garden centre has a large cafe-restaurant, and main meals are served between 12-2 (open longer for snacks and drinks).

The cafe serves:
-sandwiches
-soups
-salads
-jacket potatoes
-fish bits and chips
-chicken kiev and chips
-sausage and chips
-other snacks

The cafe area is large, light and airy - there is also an outdoor (undercover) patio area for additional eating - where it appeared dogs were allowed!

There are great views over the countryside to Whitby and the Abbey.

We had fish bits and chips and chicken kiev and chips - the fish bits were chunky and hot and the chips very golden.

The food was unpretentious - acceptable enough, but nothing special - very simple and basic fare - perfect just for filling up while you're out and about.
