The dramatic headland at Flamborough, Yorkshire
For some reason, we chose a cold day in mid-January, with the promise of snow on the wind, for our last visit to Flamborough Head.
It is, of course (!), much more pleasant on a warm and gentle summer day (although it's always a mite breezy up there at the best of times!) - but even the January cold, which chilled us to our bones, and made our poor greyhound, Ginger, shiver and tremble with cold (in spite of his cosy coat), didn't dampen our spirits and spoil our enjoyment..!
Me, looking out to sea
Flamborough itself is a very pleasant, quaint, old fashioned village - quite sizeable. There are 3 main places to access the coast:
The South Landing
The North Landing
Flamborough Head (where the lighthouse is)
The South Landing has a large, pay and display carpark (only 50p per hour when we went); a small, but cheerful cafe (The Boathouse Cafe) and toilets. There is a lovely nature trail here, with artwork and sculptures to entertain you, throughout the trail. Try this lovely nature walk
Driving up to Flamborough Head we passed the pleasant-looking Greenacre Caravan Park. We also passed some charming little wooden chalets. I don't know if these are permanent homes, or summer holiday homes... They look quite delightful, and I think they would make fantastic little holiday homes, near to this dramatic coastline.
We parked up at Flamborough Head itself. Again the car park cost 50p per hour, and there were plenty of parking spaces, plus public toilets.
There is a restaurant at the headland itself, and a little gift/souvenir shop, but these were closed the day we went, as it was during the winter months. Instead, we got a delicious takeaway at the Cliff End Cafe
Flamborough Head itself is a hilly headland, stretching into the north sea. On the day we were there last, the wind was bitingly cold, but in the summer it can be a really lovely spot (although still quite blustery!)
The main attraction at Flamborough Head is the Flamborough lighthouse.
Tours are available, but we didn't go up on this occasion, as we had the dog with us.
The leaflet also advises not to go up if you have vertigo - and I do get terrible vertigo!
I think I'm going to send Ian up to investigate, admire the views (which I'm sure must be spectacular)...
This is one of 2 lighthouses at Flamborough Head, although you can't go up, or into, the other one. This other lighthouse is an older one - infact, thought to be the oldest lighthouse in England...
It is a very attractive building, still surprisingly intact - although with quite an alarming lurch to the side, from certain angles... not quite rivalling the leaning tower of Pisa, though! The older lighthouse is on the left, as you drive up towards Flamborough Head itself, and you can't miss it! About the older Flamborough lighthouse
Beautiful Sheltered Bays at Flamborough Head
As well as the delights of the lighthouses, (and the delicious, hot fish and chips) Flamborough Head has spectacular scenery, and attractive coastal walks, down to a beautiful sheltered bay...
Look out for the single stack off the headland - it's quite impressive!
The coast around Flamborough Head is a heritage coast - and it's easy to see why...
...rolling headland, and dramatic chalk cliffs, with very peaceful and pretty little bays...
We really enjoyed our little trip to Flamborough Head - inspite of the cold January winds..!
I think that you will find lots to see and do at Flamborough, Yorkshire, and I hope you really enjoy yourselves too :o)
