Fraisthorpe Naturist Beach

by Anon.
(W Yorks)

Fraisthorpe beach was a naturist beach and still should be. Everybody used to get on very well and there were very few problems.

The thing is that East Yorkshire Council spent vast amounts of money putting up signs that threatened people with prosecution for doing something that
they had being doing since at least the end of World War 2.

Around this time we had Humberside police being used like some kind of SAS forces against law abiding members of the public, I can say that because after all
the over the top drama nobody received a criminal conviction.

Humberside police is the force that said at this time that they were bogged down with paper work and were being told to do work that was unnecessary and this is
why major mistakes had happened. The council were pressed and threatened about the legal stance themselves by a club which if the council thought
that they had a leg to stand on, surly they would have fought on.

Incidentally it was a tip off by the public of Bridlington that let everybody know that the SAS style raid was going to happen, so if the public
of Bridlington are so appalled then why did they let everybody know? I hear now that the signs have been taken down and the coast guard have said that as long as there is nothing illegal going on then they will not intervene.

So let us go back to the days where law abiding people can practice their hobby.

As you say the beach stretches from Bridlington to Hornsea. I think a small part miles away from anywhere could and should be abled to be used by law abiding naturists. If somebody is breaking the law like Dogging
then yes they should be in front of a court and punished.

Like a lot of people who are naturists or not (I have tried it on only a few occasions and not for a long time) we have written to EYC and they have NOT
replied.

Our seaside towns and cities have found it hard and most are in decline. People are going abroad for their holidays and spending less time and money in places like Bridlington. These places need all the assets and attraction that they can get.

If we turn people away because of this then places abroad will take the money gleefully as they do allow it. It will be the British business man/woman who loses out as well as those who would want to work and earn money with employment in the UK tourist industry.

Thanks for the info...
by: Charlotte

Hello

Thanks for posting this and taking the time to give a very interesting insight into the situation at Fraisthorpe beach.

I think other readers will find your information and points extremely interesting and informative - as you say, I know for a fact there are a lot of people who have interests and concerns around this subject.

I think you've made a lot of good and interesting points here - thanks for taking the time...

...what do other people think?

Any thoughts...? ...experiences?

(also check out our main Fraisthorpe beach page, here...)

Just to be clear, please note that Fraisthorpe is not currently a designated naturist beach, and this website and its author do not suggest or condone any disregard for this designation, and the signage posted by the Council at the beach.

Your discussions around the arguments are welcomed though...

Loved it
by: Borris

I used to love Fraisthorpe Beach when it was a naturist beach. It was clean and friendly and did no harm to anyone.

I cannot understand why it was changed but haven't been back since it changed.

If it changes back again I would love to visit and enjoy.

Fraisthorpe beach
by: Dave & family

We first discovered this beach June 2010 by chance on a trip to Bridlington, I don't think there is a better one along the Yorkshire coast.

There are wide expanses of fine sand, rock pools, numerous sand martins nesting in the small cliffs, former anti tank defences & pill boxes from WWII plus nice shallow incline into the sea for the braver ones usually the kids !

If you want a nice sandy beach that isn't packed then you should really try it out .

Never seen anything like it...!!
by: Charlotte

We certainly don't want that kind of thing going on in public!!

Can I just say, though, we've been to Fraisthorpe beach plenty of times and never once have we seen anything untoward of any kind!

Personally I would happily take children to this beach. It's one of my favourites - if not my very favourite - of the Yorkshire coast beaches, and until I experience anything to change that, it will remain so!

Thanks for the warning though - good to remain vigilant!

Support Fraisthorpe Beach!
by: Prof

Don't confuse the naturist area with that area further south used by 'undesirables'.

Unfortunately ERYC cannot differentiate and blames the naturists. In actual fact, it is the naturists, and in particular Fraisthorpe United Naturist (FUN) group who have done most to clean up this area.

These undesirables were advertising the beach on their web sites. It was FUN which got them to remove them and, in some cases, to actually discourage its use for those purposes.

Thanks very much for your comments, John.

Good job! Well done FUN!

Any more thoughts and experiences about Fraisthorpe being a naturist beach...?

where??
by: mark and charly

Where exactly is the area that naturists can go? I've been there once but the only signs I saw were not to use it as a naturist beach....

...after your comments I'd love to give it a shot...

Very quiet and no undesireables!
by: Anonymous

It's one of Yorkshire's top secrets, I visit it 2- times a week since May and enjoy naturism there. I have to report it is a joy with just how quiet it is and how far one can see without another soul....might not suit all, but for me, that's ideal

Why is it so hard ?
by: Anonymous

I am a middle-aged man who loves being naked. This is not necessarily sexual; I just love the feel of the sun on my skin, and the air moving over my body. But because I am male and on my own, there seems to be an immediate assumption that, assuming I was nude, I would be "up to no good".

I haven't yet tried this beach, but looked at Druridge and Redcar and been disappointed. Why is it so hard, in 2011, to find somewhere, preferably close to home, where we can be as nature intended, without worry or shame, without hang-ups? Why is there still so much stupidity and intolerance ?

There are times I despair of the human ? race.

Naturist beach
by: Oliver

Visited the beach in early July for the first time in 12 years. It was a glorious sunny hot sunny day and I was disappointed to find only 10 other naturists on the beach well away from the car park away.

Plenty of people were walking along the beach and none seemed bothered by people in the nude

This naturist beach used to be really popular and in peak summer used to be crowded.

Such a waste of perfect beach!!

Given how British resorts are struggling the council should be encouraging naturists to use the beach to bring money into the area as I know many people who would visit and stay in the area to use the beach if it was better used.

Economic Benefits to Naturist Tourism
by: Charlotte

Some very good and pertinent remarks and comments from everyone...

Oliver I particularly like the point you make about it being good for tourism, business and the local economy to attract a 'niche tourist' sector into the area...

I just saw on Nicholas Crane's 'Town: Scarborough' TV programme how Scarborough are using surfing to market their town out of season, and while naturism is probably not a winter pursuit on the East coast of Yorkshire ....????..... (correct me if I'm wrong!) - I'm certain the Bridlington area could surely do with the benefits of 'the naturist pound'...

And we already know there are many people lamenting the fact that Fraisthorpe is no longer an officially designated naturist beach, and who would visit if only it were again...

Official naturist beaches do exist, so presumably it's not impossible to 'police' any 'untoward' elements who take away from this being essentially a family activity, and innocent in nature...

Please keep your comments and thoughts coming...

Naturist at Fraisthorpe
by: Gavin and maggie

It was our first visit to Fraisthorpe on 19th Aug we were stopping on c+c temp site at Auburn Farm. There were only about 6 other naturists on the area near earls dyke the day was warm and sunny.

We would have thought many others would have been enjoying the beach on such a nice day?.

The clothed beach users didn't seem to mind the naturists. Yesterday, 20th, we had the area with only one other man with his dog.

Why is the beach so lightly used when the weather is so lovely?

The signs at auburn farm may put first time people off or is there another reason?.

THIS DAY AND AGE.
by: sunseeker

Hi all, firstly I must say that I have never visited a naturist beach or club before, though have enjoyed the feeling of being outside without clothes in my garden, though not being totally secluded, this brings its own dangers.

So, I would love to be able to visit Fraisthorpe beach with my girlfriend, safe in the knowledge that we would not be comitting any offence against the law or causing any offence to anyone using the beach.

In this day and age of tolerance for any group of people, whether they are gay or from other minority groups, it seems incredible that some people take offence at the sight of a naked human body.

I have read the comments on this page with great interest, and must say thankyou to the people that are doing their best too get this beach back for the naturist.

I hope to be able to visit someday, and enjoy the area as nature intended.

Thank you for this page
by: Kathryn

Thank you for this page and the various comments about Fraisthorpe. I am certainly pleased that I came across it, because we had been intending to visit as it sounds such a nice place from the name. I SHALL NOW AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

Who on earth wants to go anywhere and inadvertantly run into someone parading about in the buff!!

Why on earth anyone should think that nudity in a public place is acceptable is totally beyond me. If they want to be naked in front of each other that is up to them, but in private please,NOT in a public place where people of a more modest standard could see them.

So please, all you nudists out there, do it at home not on our beaches.

Fraisthorpe
by: Charlotte

Hello Kathryn

Thank you very much for your comments. I can understand naturism isn't for everyone - on a personal note, practising it is not for me...

Please don't let the thought that there might sometimes be nudists on the beach, dissuade you from visiting a very lovely beach...

We have been there plenty of times and have never seen a naturist there...

It's actually our favourite beach - read about why we like it, here...

I feel that if any naturists were there it would be highly unlikely that they would 'parade' themselves, approach you, or interfere with your visit in any way, in any case.

I'm sure most, if not all, naturists would see their hobby, or lifestyle choice, as something in line with 'nature' and certainly not intended to insult or offend the general public, or any particular person, in any way.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts, Kathryn. I do hope your opinions won't mean you miss out on visiting a beautiful beach.

If you're still concerned, try visiting in winter - too chilly for most naturists, I'm sure!

avoiding the nudists
by: Oliver

For the benefit of Kathryn, and anyone else worried about seeing nudists on Fraisthorpe beach, I just want to point out that the area used by nudists is a good 15-20 minute walk south of the car park.

This means that there is plenty of space for you to enjoy without being anywhere near nudists.

Go to the beach - enjoy it! If you do want to go for a long walk at the beach, either head north or if you go south then don't walk on or by the cliffs as most nudists stay at the top of the beach sunbathing.

Previous news reports on the subject...
by: Charlotte

Thanks for your comments, William.

I'm aware that this kind of thing was quite common at Fraisthorpe...

...and I understand it is what initiated the council into putting up the signs that are currently up there stating that the beach is not a designated nudist area...

I also understand that the genuine naturists who have used the area have been happy to help clear the area of any untoward behaviour...

...of course, naturists don't want to be associated with any sexual motive.

I've been looking back at some of the news reports from earlier years on the subject...

Comment and report in the Bridlington Free Press...

More comments... (Yorkshire representative for British Naturism, John Wymark-Hoar, writes to, "...separate us from the area used for sexual liaisons and allow the police to clearly target those breaking the law, something which, I repeat, we applaud.")

PDF from British Naturism, from 2007, about the issue

I'm not personally involved in the issues, or have any first hand personal knowledge, but as far as I know the area has now been 'cleaned up', with the support of local naturist groups.

Thanks for raising these concerns

Where are the council?
by: Anonymous

I wrote the first blog to see what reaction there was. If the majority wanted to end what is a hobby for good then so be it.

But it seems to me that most would like the area to become official again and having spoken to some residents and people who like to visit this area, most would not mind a return to it being under some control and official again.

The fact is that people are using it and will continue to do so.

What is the point of carrying on as we are with a ban, that nobody wants and people are going to ignore?

My last point is: Why have the council not been on this site and answered some of the points that have been brought up.

The council have been noticed by their absence. This seems undemocratic. So it would be nice if they would reply but don’t hold your breath, they are politicians.

We are now regular visitors to Fraisthorpe and have yet to find a better all round beach anywhere on the Yorkshire coast, as for nudists we have never seen any and hopefully never will! Can't wait for warmer weather for our next visit.
