Gibby's Cafe, Filey

by Mike
(W Yorkshire)

When in Filey the best place to eat is Gibby's Cafe in Hope Street, which can be found just off Murray Street which is the Main 'Drag' in Filey down to the beach.

We had visited before, a couple of years ago, but couldn't remember the name of the cafe or even the name of the street it was on but knew we would recognise it from the outside.

It did mean that we visited nearly all the other cafe's in Filey before we found it which gave us a chance to compare menus and prices. It certainly seems to give value for money in comparison to its major competitors.

It offers everything from a three course meal through baguettes, baked potatoes etc to cakes, tea & coffee. It is also licensed. It is not a high class restaurant but it is not pretending to be one either. What is on offer is very good value home cooked food accompanied with excellent service from friendly staff.

The decoration is simple but tasteful. On the walls are interesting art work & historical information about the Yorkshire coastline. One of the paintings is by local artist Pat Foust who is a regular customer. The picture depicts Filey in the winter & has been exhibited in the Paris Salon and the RBA London.

When the Cafe owner saw me admiring the art work she gave me a book of Sutcliffe (the famous Whitby photographer) to look at. This was really fascinating as it showed an original photograph taken by Sutcliffe opposite a modern creation of the same scene. In some comparison photographs the photographer had found the descendents of the subject of the original composition. Some of the likenesses were just amazing. I could have spent all day leafing through the book.

Later in the afternoon we returned for tea and cakes. We were taking my 83 year old mother in law out for the day after all !

Certainly I can recommend a visit to Gibby's Cafe you will not be disappointed

Food and Art - a winning combination!!
by: Charlotte

Hello Mike

Thanks for the suggestion - we will certainly look out for Gibby's Cafe next time we are in Filey - it sounds great.

And we will also be looking out for that lovely picture you describe.

Do you know what the Sutcliffe book is called? It sounds very interesting and would be a splendid addition to any Whitby or Sutcliffe fan's library.

Thanks

Charlotte

great wee place!
by: e young

Enjoyed a visit to Gibbys Cafe while on holiday from Fife,

The owner and his wife were very nice and welcoming, engaging our 8 year old daughter in conversation about her love of birds!

We enjoyed a lovely wholesome meal, for a very reasonable price.

Definitely worth a visit, we will be returning without a doubt!

Rude proprietor at Gibby's cafe
by: Helen Dean

I think we must have caught them on a bad day then as when we visited on 14th August 2010 we found the food to be very poor.

My Salmon was actually cold in the middle with traces of blood. When Alan the proprietor asked if all was satisfactory I mentioned this to him to which he muttered something under his breath then walked away never to return!

Having eaten there on previous visits we were very disappointed at it's demise in both quality & service.

Won't be eating there again! Shame as there isn't really anywhere else.

Dissappointing following takeover
by: Paul & Carole

Visited for 1st time last Summer & everything was excellent. Found Bridie very friendly & we chatted about the charities she supported. Called again early this August, same excellent standards staff friendly tho' appeared inexperienced. Bridie not present.

Called on the evening of 14th August, & overheard a man, presumably the owner showing a newcomer how things were done. Some memorabilia had been removed, the newcomer explaining that she was de cluttering & that the cafe looked too personal.

We ordered 'Whitby wholetail scampi', which appeared to be pre-formed fish in a factory manufactured batter. The chips were dry and tasteless, appearing to have never seen cooking oil. The peas were large, green & attractive, but lacked taste.

On paying the bill, enquired as to the source of the scampi. The man (whom I assumed to be the owner), appeared with a frozen pack of Whitby scampi. Its contents were clearly not what we had been served, the pieces were larger than what was on our plates & their structure was that of prawn tails. I stated this was not what I'd been served with, his reply was a gruff: "Its Whitby mate"

If these new owners make a practice of passing off factory manufactured fast food as home cooking this business, hitherto well respected by locals and tourists alike, will deservedly fail.

Thank you for sharing!
by: Charlotte

Hello Paul and Carole

Thank you very much for sharing your review, and update on what's happening at Gibby's Cafe.

Sounds such a shame!

Hopefully the new owner will soon get a feel for what regular customers like at Gibby's.

Or maybe it's just a temporary arrangement, as it still seems to be advertised as for sale here (...unless they've just not updated their records yet!)

Hope Gibby's doesn't lose its charm!

Thanks very much for sharing your review!

New Owners?........
by: Amanda

Hi Mike, Paul and Carole

I'm Amanda the 'new' manager of Gibby's Cafe in Filey. I just wanted to add my comments on the 'scampi' issue posted on here by Paul & Carole and let everyone know what is currently happening 'in house'.

I remember the day of these disgruntled customers and the way Alan responded to the issue, and in his defence it was a 'bad day at the office'. Alan has been through major health issues this year and as noted in the local papers is now back from the brink of death although unable to continue working. Along with that he also has had to bury his mother in law whom he was very close to, just before this issue arose, hence the absence of Bridie.

As for the 'de-cluttering', this was done in favour of a sale of the business as it was very personalised and perspective buyers were off put by this. The local paintings and books are still on show and available although I personally do not have the extensive knowledge Alan & Bridie would share with their customers. Pat Faust is still a regular customer.

Since joining Gibby's in June this year I have understood its tradition and charm and introduced new Gluten free & Vegetarian dishes as well as adapting & continuing with the existing menu. I hope that Paul & Carole will return and introduce themselves to me, as I would like to offer them a complimentary meal as an apology.

Oh and the scampi is Whitby Scampi!!

Regards
Amanda

Thank you and Good Luck
by: Charlotte

Hello Amanda

And thank you very much for responding to the issues raised here.

I'm very sorry to hear of Alan's ill health, but pleased to hear that he's somewhat recovered, and hope he's on the mend. It sounds like he's been through a difficult time.

I'm glad that you are settling in to your new role, Amanda, and catering for customers new and old.

I hope Paul and Carole will return to see you, and perhaps update us here, too, about their visit.

Thank you very much for your comments, Amanda - it's great that you've taken the time and trouble to respond to customers' concerns, here.

Wishing you all the very best with your management of Gibby's - and much enjoyment in your role, too.

Thanks

Charlotte

Changes at Gibby's
by: Paul & Carole

It is heartening that Amanda should reply to our earlier review. We are sympathetic to the sad circumstances surrounding our visit, being the son of a guest house owner I understand the difficulties in maintaining a public persona whilst dealing with a personal tragedy & health issues.

As newcomers to Gibby's it was clear that this cafe had become a local institution & changes tho' sad, would be inevitable should there be a change of ownership. Our review was not meant to be critical of the changes, but to illustrate that these changes seemed to have brought falling standards. It is pleasing to read of Amanda's commitment to maintaining excellence and introducing new choices to the menu.

By way of conclusion we wish Bridie & Alan well. they have clearly developed an excellent business over the years.

We also thank Amanda for the offer of a complementary meal, tho' being resident in Hull we tend to be summer visitors, enjoying the brass band concerts etc.

We look forward to seeing what Gibby's has to offer next year, and hope that the sale goes smoothly.

Paul & Carole
