About Goathland
Goathland has got to be one of the most popular tourist villages in the whole of the North York Moors.
Goathland is a very attractive village, right on top of the moors, with lovely, open views across the moors, from all around the village.
Goathland was, historically, just a sleepy little farming village until the railway came to the village in the 1830's.
Tourists came, and still come, to enjoy the fresh air, views and opportunity to escape to nature...
North York Moors Railway
These days, as well as to enjoy the moorland air and views, visitors also come to Goathland for the historic North York Moors Railway.
The NYMR steam train stops at Goathland Station - and this section of the route - along the Beck Hole Valley and Incline - is one of the most attractive (and steepest!) parts!
Harry Potter
Goathland Station is an attractive old building - and will be well-known to fans of the Harry Potter films as Hogsmeade Station. Part of the NYMR line can also be seen in films, as we follow Harry Potter's journey.
Harry Potter's Ford Anglia car can also be seen on display, parked in the village.
Heartbeat
Perhaps the main attraction to Goathland is the fact that it 'doubles' as the fictional village of 'Aidensfield' in the BBC Heartbeat' series, following the adventures of a 60's country bobby-on-the-beat.
Filming was halted (temporarily?) in 2009, but you can still see in Goathland many of the familiar landmarks from the Heartbeat series, including:
General Store
Garage
Pub (Aidensfield Arms/Goathland Hotel)
Station
The police car from the series can be viewed along the main street, as well as other classic cars in the Garage.
The main street will show many recogniseable scenes, and gives ample opportunity to snap up various Heartbeat themed souvenirs, as well as browse in gift shops, or enjoy a sit down and a nice cup of tea and a cake, in a selection of tea rooms.
Apart from Heartbeat...
Don't think though, that you have to be a Heartbeat fan to enjoy a visit to Goathland in Yorkshire...
Goathland is a very pretty village in its own right, with some very attractive and very historic buildings.
It is a very 'open' feeling village, with massive grass verges, owned by the Duchy of Lancaster. These are grazed freely by moorland sheep, who appear everywhere!
The old Church contains furniture by the famous Robert Thompson of Kilburn/ Look out for the tiny carved mice decorating all his pieces as his 'trademark'.
Goathland in Yorkshire is also a good base to explore the surrounding countryside.
There are many opportunities for walking the moorland around the village, and in the area. Visit:
Just use the + and - buttons in the top left corner of the map to zoom in and out.
