OK, so here I am telling you that the beautiful Yorkshire coast is the perfect place for your holidays in England and fun family days out in the UK…
…why do I think this?
Well, this is a wonderful area - very beautiful. Yorkshire folk are keen to claim Yorkshire as ‘God’s own County’ or the ‘Garden of England’ (no, not Kent anymore, apparently, but Yorkshire!)…
This isn’t just an idle claim… Yorkshire is one of the greenest areas in the whole of England, and has 2 National Parks:
The North York Moors actually includes part of the Yorkshire coast, and this very pretty area is an area of Heritage Coast….
And, as if one beautiful stretch of Heritage coast wasn’t enough, we also have an area of Heritage coast at Flamborough Head, and a further section at the far south of the Yorkshire east coast, at Spurn Point.
Gorgeous scenery is a given then, so what else can the Yorkshire coast offer you for days out in the UK, or holidays in England?
Well, what do you want from your Yorkshire holidays in England..?
Scarborough was actually the very first seaside spa town in England. It began as a seaside resort in the 17th Century, but became really popular once trains and railways became more widely used in the mid 19th Century.
So, Scarborough is certainly the place to go, for authentic Victorian England holidays.
Here are some other Yorkshire east coast seaside towns, which can all give you traditional family seaside holidays, days out and that style of old-fashioned Victorian England holidays:
Bridlington:
Another bustling seaside town, with glorious beaches More about Bridlington.
Filey
A pretty and small town, with a lovely sea front, and big beaches More about Filey
Whitby
A very quaint and old fashioned town, pretty and ‘higgledy-piggeldy’ – I love it!
In 2006 won the coveted ‘best beach in the UK’ from ‘Holiday Which?’ magazine, for it’s ‘postcard-perfect harbour’. More about Whitby
Quieter Seaside Towns
For a traditional seaside holiday in a quiet, little seaside town, try holidays in Hornsea or Withernsea
Hornsea Mere (Hornsea Mere is actually the largest natural lake in Yorkshire, at 2 miles long. There are usually plenty of different kinds of birds to see, especially in winter, when you get migratory birds.)
If you are looking for quiet beaches and beautiful scenery from your holidays in England, or family days out in the UK, the Yorkshire coast is definitely the place to come…
In the North Yorkshire area, the beaches are generally pretty, but small, bays and harbours, with soft, golden sand – usually surrounded by tall cliffs.
In the Southern part of the area (the East Yorkshire beaches) the Yorkshire coastline has low cliffs of clay.
(They tend to be quite crumbly, and do lose quite a chunk in winter storms).
They also have massive, flat, sandy beaches. I love these tranquil but dramatic beaches, that are rarely crowded.
If you are looking for the quaint and picturesque in your holidays in England, the Yorkshire coast is certainly for you.
There are many of these pretty little villages, with red-roofed stone cottages, nestling together higgledy-piggledy on the hills going down to the sea.
For the most picturesque of the seaside villages, visit:
Staithes: so pretty that it’s now become a recognised artists' haunt
Yorkshire was always a pivotal point in British history, so you certainly won’t be short of a spot of history and culture, to inject into your Yorkshire holidays in England…
Whether your tastes veer towards museums, stately homes, the prehistoric, or like me, you have a bit of a penchant for romantic ruins, you’ll find plenty to please...
The evocative ruins of Whitby Abbey - inspiration for the Dracula novel
Again, if you are interested in theatre and the arts, the Yorkshire east coast is an excellent destination for your British holidays.
For me, the jewel in the crown of the world of theatre along the Yorkshire coast has got to be Scarborough.
Scarborough is a real theatre town, with the award winning and prolific play-wright Alan Ayckbourn having a long standing directorship at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.
You’ll get to see all his best plays there, usually first. There are also many other world class performances, plus music, film etc.
There is also:
The Scarborough Spa
The Spa Bridlington
The Whitby Pavilion
Evron Centre Concert Hall, Filey
…plus numerous other gigs, music events, festivals etc.
Further afield, there are big theatres and concert venues in York and Hull.
David Hockney paints in the area, while Staithes has proved the inspiration for a veritable hot-bed of artistic endeavours…
You will also find plenty of small art galleries to browse in the region.
In a county with so much beautiful scenery, and wide open spaces, you might be surprised to find the pleasing hustle and bustle of towns – not to forget some interesting and original shops - its only natural to want a good souvenir of a fantastic holiday, right?
Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington are your main shopping towns along the Yorkshire east coast.
Filey, Hornsea and Withernsea are smaller towns, but still can provide an interesting shopping experience.
Scarborough has quite a busy town centre, with most of your expected high street stores, plus the more individual gift and souvenir shops along the sea front.
I really like Whitby for those little independent stores with the more unusual treasures – and as the ‘birthplace’ of Dracula (the book) it is a real mecca for goth-inspired souvenirs.
So, you see, there are plenty of things to see and do, fun family days out in the UK, ideas for short breaks and holidays in England… and this is just an overview…
