Where to Stay
Accommodation and Hotels in York

Hotels in York, bed and breakfasts, guest houses, self-catering, camping...

We help you to choose where to stay, with the best local knowledge...

Enjoy your stay in York, and make the most of your break...

choose hotels in York centre for easy access to York Minster in just minutes

York is a great place to stay for weekend breaks in the UK - and you've got plenty of choices for accommodation in York!

If you're not familiar with York, it can be difficult to know which hotels in York are good...

Living in York itself for so many years, we've not had too much excuse to stay overnight in York...

...but since moving to a village a few miles outside of York, several years ago, we've made the most of it, and have had several nights away, sampling the finest hotels in York....

...well, the finest that we can afford, anyway!

So, some of the hotels and bed and breakfasts in York are places where we've stayed ourselves...

Some are hotels in York where we've enjoyed meals, parties and functions, and some are well-respected and well-known hotels in York, and accommodation in York, that we've had recommended to us...

You're welcome, too, to share your own accommodation in York, where you, yourself, have stayed, to help to build up a useful and complete list of hotels in York, bed and breakfasts, self catering, and accommodation in York - places that real visitors recommend!

Here are some we recommend:

(P.S. This is by no means a complete list of all the good hotels in York! Let us know which great hotels and accommodation in York you've found!)

  • Premier Inn

There are 3 main Premier Inn locations in York, and we've stayed in 2 of them.

    • York City - Blossom Street (South)
    • York City - Blossom Street (North) - practically next door to the above
    • York North - Shipton Road
    • York North West - York Business Park - Nether Poppleton

An excellent budget option, we've stayed here quite a lot!

You know what you're getting here, the hotels are of a good standard, clean and well-equipped.

Choose the locations in Blossom Street if you want to be within easy walking distance of the city centre, and about 2 minutes from the city walls.

These are also very convenient for the train station (less than 5 minutes walk).

York North is about a couple of miles from the City Centre - only walkable if you like a hike! But you can take local buses into the centre, if you don't have a car. The Dormouse Inn is next door, which is a good restaurant-pub.

York North-West requires use of a car, really, as it's right on the Ring Road, on a business park. But there are several eating out options on the Business Park.

There is also the option of the York South-West Premier Inn which is located several miles outside of York, right on the main A64 road, so again you really will need a car to get the most out of your stay.

  • Travelodge

Another good budget option for travellers to York, although we haven't stayed in any of the York hotels, they, too have several options.

    For the city centre choose:

    • York Central
    • York Central - Micklegate

You will be within easy walking distance of the centre for each.

Also available is the Hull Road location, which is a couple of miles outside of York city centre, not really walkable, but local buses can take you into the centre.

Travelodge, like Premier Inn, also do an out-of-town location, which is similarly located right on the main A64 road, several miles outside of York, close to Tadcaster (they call it their 'Tadcaster' hotel). Again it's only really suitable for visits to York if you have access to a car.

Travelodge may be able to accommodate pets though, ask in advance to see.

  • Monk Bar Hotel

    (St Maurice's Road/Monkgate)

hotels in York - the Monkbar Hotel

Well-priced and of a good standard. Ian's company put up their visitors here. It's close to the City Centre (easy walking distance) and right outside the City Walls.

We enjoyed a work Christmas-do here (2011) - good food, a well-organised 'do' and good entertainment. A great evening.

    Parking available and dogs allowed.

  • York City Guest House

    (Monkgate)

A small, independent guest house - we stayed the night here for our wedding party in York (which we held at Bar 1331). Our room was small, but it was a good, clean and reasonably priced Bed and Breakfast in York, within very easy walking distance of the City Centre.

    On street parking with permit.

  • The Grange Hotel

    (Clifton)

When Ian and I first lived in York, our housemate worked here. We also, much more recently, attended a very enjoyable wedding here. A lovely hotel, one of the nicest hotels in York - with a refined Regency style, great food and excellent service - some very nice touches.

    Pets allowed by arrangement.

Just a short distance away from the City Centre (walkable).

  • Marriott Hotel

    (Tadcaster Road)

Another one of the nicest hotels in York. We used to live down one of the streets just opposite here, and Ian's cousin's wedding was held here, although when we came it wasn't a Marriott hotel.

It's located right on the Racecourse (The Knavesmire), so it's ideal for race-goers, and has great views.

It's a very fine hotel, with luxury touches. Close to the City - walkable, but a little bit too far for an easy walk - more like a trek!

  • Hotel du Vin

    (The Mount)

Ian's been to functions with work, here - a stylish hotel! Fairly close to the City Centre - walkable - just!

  • Mount Royale

    (The Mount)

Recommended for its outdoor heated swimming pool (Summer only)! A well-respected hotel on one of the nicest streets in York (well, one of our favorites, anyway!) Walking distance to City Centre - just!

  • The Bar Convent

    (Blossom Street)

Something a little bit different - stay in this beautiful, historic building, which is a working convent. Modern and comfortable hotel rooms, and the Bar Convent also houses a Museum and a good Cafe.

Easy walking distance to city centre, and convenient for train station. Make your stay in York a little more interesting!

  • The Royal York Hotel

    (Station Parade)

The grand-dame of hotels in York - probably the poshest and most luxurious of the hotels in York. A very fine and imposing building, right next to the train station.

We've been to a very nice, and very posh, Christmas meal here, and I've attended work functions here, too. Lap of luxury! And an ideal location too, very easy walking distance to the city centre. Stay here for a special break!

  • Dean Court Hotel

    (Duncombe Place)

hotels in York - The Dean Court Hotel

I've not actally been in here but it comes highly recommended and is one of the most respectable hotels in York, with a perfect location - right opposite the York Minster frontage! You can't get more impressive, or convenient, than that! Expensive though, as you might expect!
  • The Lamb and Lion Inn

    (High Petergate)

hotels in York - The Lamb and Lion Inn

A wonderful historic pub building, right next to the Bootham Bar gate in the city walls, and just minutes away from the iconic York Minster. Lovely beer garden. Comes very highly recommended.
  • The Judges Lodgings

    (Lendal)

Hotels in York - The Judges Lodgings

Another great location, right in the City Centre (very close to the main shopping streets and the Museum Gardens), and a recommended place for eating out, too. A lovely, historic building (Georgian).

  • The Churchill Hotel

    (Bootham)

Another lovely, highly respected, Georgian hotel, within walking distance of the City Centre.

  • York Pavilion Hotel

    (Fulford)

A fine hotel, a couple of miles out of the city centre, in a residential area. Walking distance to city centre (just) or a local bus ride.

  • Lady Anne Middleton's Hotel

    (Skeldergate)

Last, but certainly not least - this truly is a real hidden gem in York - a fine hotel, which is greatly respected and recommended and also serves great and very popular meals.

It's hidden away in a quiet corner just outside of the City Centre, in historic listed buildings, but is just a few minutes walk to Clifford's Tower and the centre of town.

Not actually been here (yet!) but it's still one of my favorite looking hotels in York!

Outside York

Just a little outside of York, you can find some great hotels and self catering accommodations for weekend breaks.

These are ideal if you'd like to spend a little time on your holiday exploring the surrounding countryside, too...

York has 5 Park and Rides, which ofer all day parking, and cheap and frequent bus rides into the centre of York, so, with just a short drive, you can quickly, conveniently and cheaply be into the centre of York - minimum hassle!

This makes it a sensible option for weekend breaks in the UK, and York city breaks in particular, as York has steep parking charges and lots of traffic.

Some of our recommended hotels in Yorkshire, convenient for York...

  • Ramada York, Fairfield Manor - Shipton Road, York

Only a couple of miles outside York, a fine country-house hotel where we've frequently been to functions and parties. Very nice!

The Park and Ride is just a few minutes drive away to get to the city centre.

  • Middlethorpe Hall - Bishopthorpe

Something special - a fine country house in a pretty village just outside York (just a couple of miles). This property is owned by the National Trust and run by 'Historic House Hotels', to allow you to enjoy the property as a hotel. Simply lovely!

  • Hazlewood Castle - Hazlewood (A64 towards Leeds)

Our family at Hazlewood Castle - hotels in Yorkshire

This is a bit further away, but, again is a lovely hotel. My parents held their Ruby Wedding Celebrations here. Great food and a gorgeous castle location. Very fine, and with excellent service.
