Magpie, Whitby

by Anne Macleod
(Isle of Skye)

This is my second fave place to eat in Whitby, I know there is always a queue and that always put me off, I am very impatient!

My partner is a Yorkshire man who had been lots of times and pursuaded me it was worth waiting for, and he was right, not that I told him that!

The first time I went I played it safe and had haddock and chips with a pot of tea, it was lovely and probably was up there with some of the best chips I have had.

The next time we went I had fishpie, which I still dream about! it was lovely, a huge portion in a large castiron pot which kept hot until I finished it, washed down with a glass of white wine, lovely!

The only thing I could find fault wit was the fact the tables are very close together, not much privacy, also the second time we went the service was poor.

I still cant believe that even in Febuary you have to queue, but like I said it is worth it!

Queueing for fab fish pie :)
by: Charlotte

Hi Anne

Thanks for sharing your experiences of the famous Magpie Cafe in Whitby - we've never eaten there, as the queue always puts me off too!

I can't believe it, either - whatever time of year you go it never seems to be without a queue - although I'm sure it must happen! We never queue - I think we're both too impatient! Although I think we may well have eaten fish and chips at their takeaway in some dim and distant memory!

It's very good to know it's well worth the queue though! That fish pie does sound delicious - my mouth is watering, and it's nowhere near lunch-time yet!

Perhaps we'll need to plan a visit in advance and start queueing before we're actually hungry! Although I see online that they will take bookings at certain times, so this could be worth a try!

I also spotted The Magpie Cafe Cookbook (downloadable e-book), which could be a very nice purchase for keen fans of their food!

If you can't be bothered with the queueing, try the Quayside fish and chips, which is just down the road - we had Quayside fish and chips in Bar Seven which was a lovely upstairs bar, (quite quiet on the day we visited) with great views across to the Abbey...

Thank you very much for sharing your review - hoping you'll come back to Whitby again soon!

Best wishes

Magpie Cafe
by: Dave Young

If I could give the Magpie 10 stars it would deserve them all. I live in Beverley and my partner and I plan out visits to The Magpie first and Whitby second!

Sure you may have to queue but the excellent way the establishment is managed ensures this wont be for long and it's certainly worth it.

The portions are enormous and the presentation just like going back a generation. Even a tea strainer and proper tea. What luxury.

There are excellent Fish Restaurants up and down the Yorkshire coast but they'd have to go a long way to match The Magpie.

My advice is don't vist Whitby without leaving room for The Magpie both in terms of time and space in the stomach.

The Magpie
by: Diane

I haven't braved the queues at the Magpie for some time, although I agree that it's good once you're inside, apart from the overcrowding.

Just as good, in my opinion, is the Royal Fisheries on Baxtergate.
