Mallyan Spout Waterfall
Goathland, North York Moors

Mallyan Spout Waterfall, Goathland, North York Moors

Mallyan Spout Waterfall Walk

Enjoy a short riverside walk to the impressive Mallyan Spout Waterfall, at Goathland in the North York Moors. We share our trip with you....

While in Goathland we enjoyed a walk down to the spectacular Waterfall.

Mallyan Spout Waterfall Walk - comfy bench to stop and admire the views

Although the distance itself isn't that far - maybe just around half a mile each way from the village, the walk is quite hard going - up and down a steep hill - and finishing up by scrambling over rocks.

It's well worth it though, as the walk along West Beck is beautiful and tranquil and the waterfall is truly spectacular.

The walk to Mallyan Spout - see the waterfall behind the trees

The waterfall is around 70ft (21m) high - the tallest waterfall in the North York Moors, and is at its most impressive after a spell of heavy rain.

  • The walk starts next to the Mallyan Spout Hotel.
  • From the main car park in Goathland village, proceed along the main street, and continue until you reach the Mallyan Spout Hotel (around half a mile away).
  • Go through an unusual iron gate to the right of the hotel. The footpath is quite steep (downwards), with steps, and may be muddy or rocky.
  • Enjoy the views across the valley

Mallyan Spout Waterfall Walk - admire the view across the valley as you descend to the river

  • At the bottom of this steep bank, follow the path to the left. This is a rocky trackway, which follows alongside the river bank...

It was quite muddy, but a very attractive and atmospheric walk - surrounded by nature, greenery, moss, rocks and stones - and accompanied by the rushing sounds of the river and waterall.

  • Mallyan Spout - pathway by river

  • After a short while, the rocky road peters out to rocky clambering as you approach the waterfall. You should be quite sure-footed if you wish to proceed, as the way could be quite treacherous, and very slippery when wet.
  • You can get right up to the Mallyan Spout waterfall - and even pass underneath it, where the footpath continues the other side.

  • Mallyan Spout, Goathland, North York Moors - the river pool by the waterfall

  • The Mallyan Spout waterall is impressive - a tall, rushing 'spout', falling from on high.

The sound was so loud we couldn't hear each other speak - but still the spot was beautifully tranquil and felt far from civilisation.

  • The way through looked far too slippery and dangerous for us to continue, so we returned the same way.

  • Ian returning from Mallyan Spout Waterfall, Goathland, North York Moors

  • On your return, you can choose to go back up the steep hill towards Goathland (Mallyan Spout Hotel) or continue the three quarters of a mile to Beck Hole (along a wooden boarded walk).
  • We continued back up the hill, and were very pleased to take advantage of the benches - well positioned for a much needed rest!

This was a hard walk (steep hill and rock clambering) but well worth the effort to spend time in such a green and peaceful glade, with the dramatic rushing spout, and a nice way of getting back to nature for a bit...
