When you are planning your holidays, short breaks or family days out in the UK, it is so nice not to have to take a step into the unknown...

This is why I am building this website with information about the Yorkshire east coast - and I think this applies doubly for maps. It's good to have some idea of where you are going...

That it is why I am including this section on maps for you. I love maps and used to work in an office drawing maps. Unfortunately it didn't leave me with fantastic map reading skills - I make a very poor navigator on car trips out! (Thank goodness we now have sat nav!!)

Maps are always useful, to know where you are, or have some idea where you are going, so, without further ado:

Here is a map of Britain. The Yorkshire coast is the area of coast between (approximately) Hull and Middlesbrough on the map (east side of the country):

Whitby is a beautiful, old fashioned little town, with so many little streets, passages, yards and 'ginnels'. It is so easy to get lost!

Map of Yorkshire - Scarborough Map

Scarborough is a deceptively large town, with the town shopping centre at a completely different level to the beaches, sea front and much of the touristy area. Unless you know where you are going, it is quite easy to get lost!

Filey is a lovely, old-fashioned little town, with the main attraction the long sea front and beautifiul clean beaches. Find out how to get from beach to town, and to the famous Filey Brigg. Make sure you don't get lost!

Bridlington is quite a big town with a lovely large sea front and gorgeous, flat, sandy beaches.

Map of Yorkshire - Hornsea Map

Hornsea is a really nice seaside town where we often visit. It has a lovely sea front and picturesque beaches, with a really quaint little town, and the impressive Mere (large lake).

Hornsea isn't very large, so you probably won't get lost, but it's still useful to get your bearings...

Paper Maps to Order

For a more detailed paper map of Yorkshire, suitable for planning walks and trips around the area, the best maps are the Ordnance Survery Maps. You should be able to buy these in local bookshops and tourist centres in the area, or you can order them in advance:

• OS Landranger Series (1:50,000 Scale)
  • Whitby, Esk Dale and Robin Hood's Bay: Click here!

  • Hornsea, Hull to Spurn Head: Click here!
• OS Explorer Series (1:25,000 Scale)
  These are larger scale. This means that the detail appears bigger on the page. This is the most suitable map if you are planning on doing country walks.

  • Bridlington, Driffield and Hornsea: Click here!
