Dogs Allowed?

by Kate
(Knaresborough)

Are dogs allowed onto Hornsea beach throughout summer or any of the beaches nearby?

Many Thanks,

Kate Chandler

Dogs are allowed... :o)
by: Charlotte

Hi Kate

As far as I'm aware (from the last time I went there, which was only a few weeks ago) it is only the central part of Hornsea beach where dogs are banned in Summer. You can take them on the northern and southern parts at any time of the year.

I believe that dogs are allowed at Mappleton (just to the south of Hornsea) and at Skipsea (to the north). (Small car park and toilets are available at Mappleton, I'm not sure about Skipsea)

Our own personal favourite beach to take our dog is at Fraisthorpe (just south of Bridlington) but still not too far at all from Hornsea. It is a quiet beach, but when the tide is out there are miles of flat sands. There is a little car park, toilet and snack-van at Fraisthorpe too, which is always handy.

If you want any further clarification, you could try the East Riding Council's Foreshore Office, who should have the updated information:

Foreshores Office : open all year round during normal office hours.Tel 01262 678255

I hope you enjoy your trip to the coast. Do come back and tell us all about it... :o)

Best wishes

Charlotte

Bridlington Beach - South

by Sally Hunter
(the New Forest)

Retirement is good !

Retirement is good !

Bridlington beach was a huge success with our 2 retired racing Greyhounds and children alike, for the vast sandy beach that is revealed at low tide. It appears to stretch for as far as the eye can see.

Dogs are allowed on the beach up to the areas clearly indicated and ours loved to run free on the sand. There is a convenient bin for their waste too so don't forget to pick up after your dogs.

There was plenty of room for a football kick-about without colliding with other people and lots of scope for sand castle building.

There was also lots to watch on the water too with sailing competitions taking place just off the shore.

Just up from the promenade (if you can avoid the dive bombing seagull protecting it's young! - only seasonal I'm sure) is the friendly Bowling Club, offering very reasonably priced refreshments, the opportunity to use the putting green and play bowls for a small fee and hiring of the appropriate footwear.

It was an excellent morning out enjoyed by one and all.

More pics of my greyhounds at Bridlington beach (and elsewhere) here...

Thanks Sally

Your greyhound looks beautiful - it's a great space for greyhounds to run - think they really enjoy the space and freedom!

Glad you all had a good day at the beach - and hope you'll come back to visit us in Yorkshire soon.

Reighton Sands

by Viki
(Manchester, UK)

The beach we find ourselves on most often is Reighton Sands. Reighton Sands is a great beach. Its really big with lots and lots of space.

Its a really good beach for dogs. We always let our 2 dogs on it to run and they and we always have a really good time.

We often go on holiday and stay just near there in a caravan - I love that part of the world - beautiful! I love being able to go down to the beach every day.

Hi Viki

Thanks very much for your contribution.

We have a dog too, and like to let him off on the beach. We haven't been to Reighton Sands with him yet, so we will have to try him there.

I hope you enjoy your future holidays at the Yorkshire coast :o)

Was Hunmanby Gap!

Our favourite beach was Hunmanby Gap...

...until we read that dogs are free to run loose

...shame of hunmanby parish council to let this happen what a utter health hazard...

...another beach turned into crufts!!!!!!!!!!

Comment:

Hi

Thanks for your submission - its a shame that you feel like this...

...I know myself, and many other dog owners really appreciate the fact that there are still beautiful beaches like this available for our dogs to run.

Of course, I agree that dog owners must always be responsible and pick up after their pets, and not allow their pets to become a nuisance to other beach users.

As far as I am aware, (...does anyone know?) the decision to allow dogs onto the beach at Hunmanby Gap is not a new one, so if you have enjoyed spending time on this beach in the past, please do not let the fact that you may have read something you don't like the sound of, stop you allowing yourself to enjoy your favourite beach - that really would be a shame...

...in all likelihood the next time you visit will be just the same as the last, and you won't be bothered by dogs there...

I'm very sorry you feel like this, but hope you can still get to Hunmanby Gap beach and enjoy the wonderful views and atmosphere there...

Thanks very much for sharing your experiences

Best wishes

Charlotte

Shame on the person making the Crufts comments...

Our dogs are beautifully behaved, we are responsible dog owners who ALWAYS clear up after our dogs, and we really appreciate that the majority of people are happy to share our beautiful countryside with all.
