Olivers Mount Restuarant. on top of Olivers Mount, Scarborough near the monument.

by Ted
(Hull)

Good food at a reasonable price ie. £7/£10 per main course. Full Sunday lunches, Fish &Chips, Scampi & Chips, Gammon, Omelettes, Brunches, Sandwiches and a quite comprehensive menu and Licenced drinks.

A very good view across the south bay of Scarborough from the conservatory and superb service from the very friendly staff

Myself not being very mobile I find the small car park opposite the restuarant very useful.

Dogs are also allowed in the snack bar area.

Thanks very much for your review, Ted, I've always thought that looks a nice place to eat, but we never seem to think of it if we're in the town, or at the sea-front...

I'm sure it's worth the trip for the view alone, though - it must be stunning!

I always expect it to be more expensive than that - we must try it!

Thanks so much for the recommendation - it sounds a great place to go!

View from Oliver's Mount

I agree with you about Oliver's Mount Restuarant, we have eaten there several times and never been disappointed, their triple layer chocolate cake is to die for!!!

The views are also stunning - we were up there last week and it is as beautiful as ever - took some wonderful pictures from the Memorial up there.

Thanks Vanda - it's sounding better and better - chocolate cake!!!

The view is always great from up there - particularly if you get a nice clear day, of course!

Thanks for the recommendation!

Charlotte :o)

P.S. - for anyone who hasn't been up there yet, you really should, just for the views - you can read more about Oliver's Mount and see my photos (cheap camera, hazy day in winter) on the main Oliver's Mount page, here....

Linda Janes Cafe, Eastborough, Scarborough

by David Watson
(Sheffield)

My family and I were walking down the main street in Scarborough that leads to the sea, and saw this clean looking cafe, so we had a full English breakfast, the quality of the ingredients was superb, the best we have had in Scarborough.

All for £4.20, including a hot drink, and if you like black pudding, its there.

We highly recommend Linda Janes Cafe.

Thanks very much for sharing your review, David - it does sound good - and very handy for both the sea-front and town.

Ian loves black pudding - so that's well worth knowing!

Linda Janes Cafe

Yes we have visited there too, and the meal was spot on and cheap too.

I had Ham chips and double fried Egg, she was generous with the ham too.

I would recommend it, she is cheaper than the cafe's down on the front!

Brilliant!

We ate here twice and the food was excellent. What was on the menu was what you got.

Well cooked and well priced.

I must admit that the mega breakfast beat me, I just couldn't finish the chips.

If we are ever back in Scarborough, we will be here more than once.

Fish and chips at the Golden Grid, Scarborough

by Dent
(North Lincolnshire)

Reading the review re the above restaurant (here...) I wonder if we went to a different place this week.

We had large haddock and chips with tea and bread and butter for two.

The fish was small, very thin, seemingly frozen, the chips were dark coloured and appeared to have been cooked more than once.

No side plates poor service and the cost, normally immaterial for good food, was £24.70.

I have just returned from having the same meal at Steeles in Cleethorpes, twice as much fish, twice as good and for £17.30

I normally go to Walkers at Ayton, nr Scarborough but due to the time of day decided to go to the Golden Grid, I would have been better going hungry.

Comments:

Hello Dent

Thank you very much for sharing your review, and letting us know your very different experience.

What a shame you didn't enjoy your meal here!

As you can see by the photos on our review our meal was large and the food all lightly cooked and golden.

What a pity you couldn't have the same experience!

Thank you very much for sharing your experience.

Have other readers eaten here? What did you think? Why not add your comment too, and let us know...

Wackers in Scarborough

We have been to Wackers, but prefer Mother Hubbard's which is just up the road from Wackers.

Saying that, Wackers in York is much better than the Scarborough restaurant!

Wackers Scarborough

We took the family and an American friend for a day out at Scarborough two weeks ago. We wanted to have fish and chips to finish off the day. We called in at Wackers at 5.40pm (they closed at 6) and sat at a table. The waitress came over to inform us that we could stay to eat but there were no mushy peas, peas or baked beans left at all!!

This was terrible! So, we left and instead enjoyed a good meal at Mother Hubbards just around the corner.

We thought it was a disgrace to run out of such essentials and fish restaurants should open later too.

Thanks for sharing your review, Victoria - I have to agree, that doesn't sound like commendable service!

And I do agree too that the fish and chip restaurants of Scarborough should be open later - particularly in Summer, when it's not beyond the realms of possibility that visitors enjoying the beach and seafront all day might want a bite to eat at 5.30pm or even 6.30pm!

We have had a little difficulty in the past finding places open a little later to eat, even in Summer!

Anyway - thanks very much for sharing - and it looks like it's a thumbs up for Mother Hubbard's then - we'll have to try it!

Jaconellis ice cream parlour

by noddy
(toy town)

At £1.95 for a lemon top and only half as big as next door and 50p dearer you won't see us at this rip off parlor again and the server was extremely rude when asked about the price of this dwarf miniature ice cream.

Ingham's, Filey

by Pauline
(Derbyshire)

Lovely fish, good service and a good cup of tea. Always have at least one meal there when on holiday and always enjoy it.

The portions are huge - even the 'smaller' portions. However, the food is very good.

Would recommend.

Hi Pauline

Thanks very much for your review of Inghams - we often have take-away fish and chips from there - but had an eat-in meal recently which was good.

Read about our visit

Yes the portions were big! We certainly weren't expecting two big sausages!

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Pauline.

Best wishes

Real coffee and sea views at Maisies

Situated next to the Sea Front Chippy on Marine Drive, Hornsea, Joan & Steve have now opened the second Maisies Tea Room, Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlour in Hornsea.

Visit their new location and enjoy stunning views of Bridlington bay, with on street parking right outside a large car park, 2 minutes walk away, and the central prom across the road.

Where better to visit when in Hornsea, sit outside on the terrace and enjoy the fresh air, sea views and aroma of freshly ground coffee...

...yes, at Maisies you get REAL coffee, Cappuccino or a Latte, not drinks out of a machine!

Great, freshly made food; from a full english breakfast to dinner by candle light on a Saturday...

...to home-made traditional Sunday lunch and truly marvellous Ice creams !!!

Now all you have to do is visit and try for yourself...

No.1 for fish and chips in Hornsea: "Whitehead"

by Doug
(Skipsea Driffield)

Whitehead's fish and Chip shop and restaurant in Hornsea, the number of visitors all year round say it all, a 5 star fish and chip shop, good quality fish from sustainable fishing grounds. local potatoes from a farm very close to Hornsea, modern with digital screen displaying the menus, and information on local business, news, weather, and things going on in Hornsea.

Whiteheads is at the top of its game and has been an East Yorkshire regional finalist for the national "Fish and Chip shop" of the year award, and consistently gained top industry awards.

The fish is always so fresh well cooked and you can ask for gluten free batter.

Geoff Whitehead is really involved with the town, supporting local groups such as Hornsea Inshore Rescue, he also, being a keen footballer, has managed Hornsea Town Football club.

Open all year, you will always enjoy a visit to Whiteneads for either a take-away or visit to their resraurant, found at the Green, follow the main road toward Freeport shopping and turn left toward the seafront, you have arrived at the Green and a small parade of shops with Whiteheads on the right hand side...

Spring Garden Centre, Sigglesthorne near Hornsea

by Charlotte
(E Yorks)

We had a nice meal at the very large 'Spring' garden centre in Sigglesthorne, near Hornsea.

We ate in the 'Orchid' cafe/restaurant on site - this was a very spacious eating area, with several parts to it, including a conservatory area.

Sit at a table and choose from the menu, then order at the counter, where you can also choose other food and drink items.

The menu was quite varied with sandwiches, salads, jacket potatoes, cakes etc but also some larger more filling meals.

It particularly appealed as it had a gluten free section, (still pretty rare to find!) and I chose gluten free fish cakes from it, which came with chips, peas and a small side salad. Very tasty and great fishcakes!

Ian had a burger, which was very large - yummy too!

The garden centre and cafe were both quite busy but we weren't kept waiting too long for our food - staff were polite, helpful and everything seemed to be running very efficiently.

A great place to stop for a bite to eat (even a spot of shopping!) on the road to Hornsea!

Where to find the garden centre, opening times and further details...

Spring Garden Centre, Orchid Restaurant

We love eating at this Garden Centre the meals are excellent and as you say, Charlotte, staff always very friendly.

I must admit though as the other comment said some of the garden centre staff are not as friendly or courteous as they could be (eg talking to other members of staff while serving a customer) which I think is very rude. The majority are very good though.
