Whitby Wedding

by Jackie
(Leeds)

We loved Whitby so much we got married there! I adore the little winding streets and the breathtaking views from the abbey. An amazing place with so much atmosphere.

Of course with the Gothic side of Whitby we couldn't just have a regular white wedding so we had a black and red themed wedding. It was a wonderful day.

Great site by the way, I love the East coast.

Hi Jackie

Thank you for your kind words about my site. Apologies for the delay in getting this on site, but I've been away from the PC for the last couple of weeks.

Wow - how lovely - a Whitby Wedding - I bet that was a day to remember!

I agree, Whitby is a very special place - and where better to spend such a happy day of your lives!

A red and black themed wedding seems highly appropriate for Whitby - gothically gorgeous!

Thank you so much for sharing your special memories of Whitby...

I hope you go on to have many more happy Whitby experiences and memories...

Charlotte xx

Farndale Daffodils - Mothering Sunday 2012

by FAY DIXON
(HOOK NEAR GOOLE)

My requested treat for Mothering Sunday was to walk along the river Dove from the car park up to Church Houses turning right at the top of the road and sweeping along and down down down back to the car park (a short 4 miles) BUT there were very few daffodils blooming - were we just that little bit too early - though there didn't appear to be buds to come out! However the Spring countryside looked spectacular!

Thank you very much for sharing your walk, Fay - what a lovely idea for Mothers' Day. Pity you didn't get to see the full display. I think daffodils all over were a bit late in flowering this year.

There's always next year! Or ask to go for an Easter treat, instead.

I think the display is about over for this year, although there should be some pretty bluebells a bit later in the spring.

Thanks very much for sharing your trip. It's a nice countryside stroll in any case, I'm sure. Glad you enjoyed it.

Sorry - I obviously worded that badly! I meant for Easter next year, in case Mother's Day was once again too early to catch the best of them!

Have a good weekend! :)

Best Bit of the Yorkshire Coast

by John A Ramsden
(Cleckheaton)

I know I should not say this to somebody from the south as we want to keep what we have secret. Joking apart, its probably because we are bad at publicity that few people know how good the Yorkshire coast is.

But then again that could be a good thing because most of it is not commercialised and unlike parts of the North West coast you don’t have to cross a major road to get to the sea front. Blackpool Morecambe and Southport spring to mind.

If you want to know a great part of the Yorkshire coast try the area between Scarborough and Saltburn on Sea. I know everybody loves Whitby but there are areas where the North Yorkshire Moors meets the sea and have scenery that any country in the world would be proud of.

Again many people know about Robin Hoods Bay but above Whitby there are places like Runswick Bay and Staithes and within this area (Between Scarborough and Saltburn on Sea) there are a lot of little bays that may be hard to get down to, but they are some of the most beautiful in the UK.

A number of people like Sandsend which is just to the north of Whitby but when I was there it seemed very busy but it is still a nice area with plenty of space on a sandy beach, hence the name.

Also just inland there are many places of interest and intrigue definitely worth a holiday.

Hello John

Thanks for your suggestions - and I happen to agree with you - I think its precisely because its so unspoilt and wild that this is one of the most beautiful bits of the coast (and yeah I do still partly want to keep it a secret just for us up here!!) lol

We've just come back from a few days away in the more inland bit of the North York Moors (around Castleton), exploring the areas around Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Staithes and the moors and moorland villages further inland - totally stunning and unspoilt!

I agree, definitely worth a holiday!

I'll be reviewing more areas on site within the coming weeks so stay tuned!

Thanks for your suggestions

Robin Hood's Bay in the best snow for years!

by Jenny
(Leeds)

Christmas in Robin Hoods Bay

Christmas in Robin Hoods Bay

I went to RHB with some friends at Christmas (2009), in the snow and ice and it was beautiful!

Even driving there (from Leeds) was magical as en route (not quite sure where) near to RHB there were foresty areas that looked just like Narnia!

Here is the best pic from the trip.

Wow Jenny ... I love the pic - looks great!

It's a shame, but I didn't manage to get that way at all when it was really snowy and pretty - as I suspected, it looks fantastic!

Great photo - thanks for sharing :o)

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)

Thanks im glad you like the pic!

Its probably a fairly rare sight with all the snow, it was a bit tricky getting there though!

Especially in a little fiat panda :D

But still managed to do some fossil/driftwood/pebble hunting on the beach - 'free stuff for the home' i call it :D

The old lighthouse at Flamborough Head

by Martin
(Manchester, UK)

I suppose the oldest lighthouse was at Alexandria and in the original 7 Wonders of the World.

In the pre lit lighthouse days clifftops often had buildings on them for navigation, sometimes these were towers or follies, but some old ones were chapels, as in Dorset on a 100m cliff.

The Chapel was built in 1100s and monks used to attend it as a lookout and put warning lights in.

There is also a 1300's lighthouse on the Isle of Wight.

Comment:

Thank you Martin - this is most fascinating - and very good to be able to put Flamborough's story in context to other lighthouses around the country, and indeed the world.

Thanks very much!

Battles around Bridlington

by Allan Tindall
(Harrogate, North Yorkshire)

My name is Allan Tindall, I was born in Bridlington, 62 years ago and used to live in Jubilee Ave.

Well, when I was young, about 10, I had nothing to do, so I dug a big hole in our garden about four feet deep, and I found a sword the hilt had large gems in it, and the blade was eaten away by rust half way down.

I had forgotten about this and my wife asked me if any battles had been fought around Bridlington.

I said I did not know, we did a thing at Burlington school about the Vikings and the Norman,s apart from that I can not remember.

After Secondary School, Saint Georges, I joined the army and settled down, when i came ou,t in Harrogate were I have been ever since.

I asked my mother about the sword she said it was rubbish and I should throw it away which I did, and when I went back to find the sword, I had stupidly got rid of, I could not find it.

Good luck to those who found it.

Please let me know if there was anything that could tell me more...

Hi Allan

Thank you very much for that interesting piece of history.

I have removed your address for your own internet security, but I will pass on any messages for you.

I have also removed the house number of your previous home in Jubilee Avenue, in consideration of the privacy of the current occupants, but if anyone in Jubilee Avenue has found such a thing, or wants to look for such a thing, I will put them in touch with you....

The Bridlington area was a very active area in Viking times, (as well as other periods of history) so it is quite possible to have had minor skirmishes, even if there were no major battles recorded.

People often used to bury their valuables and treasure for safe-keeping, too, so this could also be a possibility.

I do hope someone can shed some light on this for you

Has anyone got any information about this for Allan?

Thanks for getting in touch

Charlotte
