North York Moors Walk Scalefoot Farm to Eskdale Inn Castleton
North York Moors Walk - Scalefoot Farm to Eskdale Inn, Castleton
A short and enjoyable walk across field and moor - fantastic views. North York Moors walk from Scalefoot Farm to The Eskdale Inn, Castleton, North Yorkshire. Our pics and experiences here...
We did this pleasant, short walk on a frosty March morning, in glorious sunshine, while staying at The Old Granary Holiday Cottage close to Castleton.
The walk goes right from the holiday cottages at Scale Foot Farm, but if you aren't staying here, the walk lies on a public footpath, which can be accessed from:
either of the Castleton to Commondale roads
or a short distance from the public walkers car park at the western (top) end of Castleton
the Station at Castleton
This is a short walk - about 2 miles in total - with some uphill and downhill sections - some are quite steep, but it is through a lovely attractive landscape, mainly fields, but with great views across to the moors, and down the River Esk Valley.
Start the walk, (or join from the public footpath) by going through the gap between the 2 cottages, and through the gate, looking downhill
Walk down the left hand side of the field, down through the gate, and continue down the left hand side of the field, to the gate at the bottom of the field (near large water troughs)
Follow the path to another stile, to the bridge over the river (note that stone built supports either side, and the old stone trod leading to the bridge)
Follow the path through the field, and go up the incline to the stile (looking down on the river)
Follow the path uphill along the right hand side of the field, to a stile at the top of the field
The path then goes in 2 directions - we followed the path up over moorland, to the road.
When you reach the road, turn left at the road, and follow the road, winding down to the river, and over the bridge to the Station and the Eskdale Inn
The Eskdale Inn serves drink and food, so this could be a good spot to stop and rest.
Castleton village (and public toilets) are only a short distance away, back across the bridge and up the hill.
To return: follow the the road back up the same way, taking a footpath signposted down on the right - following along the edge of a field to return downhill to the stile
It's now an easy walk downhill on your return, along the same path - other than a short, steep incline on your return to Scalefoot Farm
Luckily there's a nice bench half way up - a great spot for a rest, and ideal for enjoying the spectacular views up across the moors.
Visitors staying at the farm can divert at this point, along the edge of a field, down to a beautiful lake/pond with jetty.
Otherwise, the footpath continues up the hill and through the gateway between the 2 holiday cottages, and thence through the farmyard, following the track back up the hill until you pick up the footpath waymarkers again.
We really enjoyed this walk on the North York Moors, and found it a lovely, refreshing way to start the morning - even better was the fact that we could enjoy this walk right from the very front door of our holiday cottage...
I hope we will soon be able to return to explore the other footpaths crossing the stunning North York Moors, from the farm...
