Our York Story

Hello - Welcome to York, England

This is the page where we introduce ourselves properly, and tell you a little bit about us, our lives, and why we love York so much...

Me in front of the Merchant Adventurer's Hall in York, England

My name is Charlotte, and I'd also like to introduce you to my husband, Ian...

Ian, as we walk in the Museum Gardens, York, England

We've lived in and around York since we both moved here, and met, in 1997...

Neither of us is from York originally - Ian's from Scarborough, and I actually grew up in South Wales...

We chose to move into this lovely city, and since then, we've grown to love it more and more!

It's got a great feel here - plenty of history and culture, some interesting shops, and plenty to keep you entertained.

I did history and archaeology at University (in Exeter) so I find I can really appreciate the importance of all those fantastic York historical and archaeological attractions...

We've lived in York City itself for around 8 years (although never within the city Walls - much to our disappointment!) and around York for around 15 years in total...

Between us, we've worked in York for more than 20 years!

My husband, Ian, and I, were living together before we even met! Yes, really! Sounds a bit bizarre, but we moved into a shared house separately, as strangers...

It was a lovely, Victorian property, overlooking the Knavesmire Racecourse...

Then we met!

It felt like a Big Brother House (well before Big Brother existed, of course!) as there were 9 separate rooms, all individually let.

Well, Ian and I met, fell in love, and the rest, as they say, is history! We had a great time discovering and exploring York together, as we got used to our early working life.

At that time, neither of us worked in York (I worked in Leeds, and Ian worked in Harrogate), but it was only a matter of 18 months later for me (a few years for Ian) before we both found suitable jobs in our city of choice: York.

We've lived in several different locations, all around York. These days, we've mot moved far out - we now live within easy commuting distance, to the east of York.

York is still the centre of our shopping, cultural and social life.

While I now work at home (on this website, and others), Ian still commutes to work in York, every day...

So, our links to, and love of, York are still very strong. Sometimes we still think about selling up and moving back into the city we love!

We still love to visit York at every opportunity, and, if I'm honest, this website is, in large part, just a really good excuse to get us back into York more often...

...and to allow us to appreciate all its finer points, and to explore it like the most eager tourists!

Last year (2010) we finally married, (after 14 years together!) and I was fortunate enough to recover from a health problem that I'd been struggling with since January 2007...

(I used to have ME/CFS - Jenny Gilmore and the Lightning Process helped me to recover. Thanks Jenny!)

So, with a rejuvenated energy and vigour, I'm most keen to renew my acquaintance with my old friend, York...

...and catch up with all the lovely York places I've missed out on over the past 4 years!

me in York England

'Hello again York - I love you and I've missed you - What have you got to show me these days...?'

I'm loving exploring York properly again, revisiting old favourites, discovering new treasures, and digging deeper to find all those hidden gems...

And I'm loving having this website, so that I can share all my York favourites and finds with you...

I hope you'll join me, and Ian, on our York journey, and I hope you'll enjoy reading about our York discoveries, reviews, recommendations and visits as much as we enjoy making them, and writing about them!

Get some more ideas for your own things to do in York, here...

I also cover the Yorkshire Coast on this website, too - another spot where we like to spend our holidays, weekends and free time.

It's an easy trip from York, so perhaps you might like to explore the coast too...?
