Runswick Bay's Royal Hotel Reviewed... We had a lovely meal at the Royal Hotel - the ideal spot to admire the view and soak in the atmosphere. Read our review... We stopped for lunch on our day out at Runswick Bay at the characterful Royal Hotel. This is a quaint little pub, nestled amongst the tiny streets of the old village, overlooking the Bay itself, with stunning sea views. This used to be a hotel, as the name suggests, but now is just a pub (with a holiday flat above on upper floors).
We ate inside, in the lounge bar - the Royal Hotel has an olde-worlde and traditional interior, quite small and cosy feeling, with an open fire in winter.
We sat by the window, with great views across Runswick Bay, and looked at a selection of interesting books about the area, to amuse ourselves.
There were some nice books with old photos of Whitby - including a book of FM Sutcliffe's work. There was also a further small bar, quite small, and appeared less well used. There's also a little patio outside where bar snacks are served, and smoking is permitted - again, fantastic views!
Dogs are allowed - inside and out - Dogs must be dry, on a lead and under the supervision of a responsible person. There were also dog water bowls available outside. It was a very relaxing spot to stop and eat - with very polite and friendly service. Menu At the date of our visit (July 2010) the menu included:
I had a jacket potato with cheese, and Ian had a jacket potato with chilli.
They were lovely - soft potatoes, well baked, and really buttery, with plenty of grated cheese, and a small, fresh salad and coleslaw.
Ian's chilli, too, was lovely, fresh and tasty. All in all, this was a great light lunch/pub snack, in a very relaxing spot - and a lovely quaint pub - we'd definitely come again!
