Find out more about this beautiful village, near Whitby, Yorkshire. Glorious beaches and a tranquil spot for days out or longer breaks and holidays... Find out more....
We visited on one of the hottest days of the Summer. After wilting in the heat on the clifftops of Whitby visiting the Abbey, it was nice to be down at sea level, experiencing the refreshing breezes...
Sandsend is a lovely seafront village, just to the north of Whitby. It is a peaceful place, an ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle of busy Whitby, to just admire the views, and enjoy the beach...
The massive sandy beaches are the main reason to visit. They are lovely and flat, with gorgeous soft sand, and stretch for miles - no wonder they are such an attraction!
Approach the village from Whitby on the A174. You can park on the roadside if it is quiet, or proceed to the public car park at the northern end of the village (Pay and Display).
We didn't stop long in Sandsend, (we didn't have long on the car park ticket) but really enjoyed a refreshing walk along the seafront. We admired the views of Whitby Abbey (sadly, it was slightly hazy, otherwise it would have been truly spectacular) and across the beaches.
We had our greyhound, Ginger, with us, and so sadly, couldn't make the most of the tempting beach. Dogs are allowed on the whole of the beach out of season.
From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are not allowed on the main part of the beach (qualified as: 'From the steps below the public conveniences below Sandhills, to the slipway at Bank Bottom Car Park').
This is a tranquil little place, but there are plenty of refreshment stops, guest houses and a handy beach-side shop.
All of us on the seafront
We were very tempted by the charming Wits End Cafe just near the car park, which has a courtyard garden eatery and comes very highly recommended.
Don't forget to explore the very pretty village (inland) too:
