Save the Futurist Theatre, Scarborough
by Charlotte
(East Yorkshire)
The Futurist Theatre's future is now uncertain - under possible threat of being demolished! This would be such a shame for the theatre itself, the seafront, the whole town and the many daytrippers and visitors to the town... The Futurist still attracts big names and draws big crowds, so join in the public demand to save the Futurist from uncertainty... ...and restore it to it's former glory! Ask the Council to save the theatre (easy online form), and find out more information in the campaigns running from: (click below...) 10 June 2010:Latest update here...More meetings to follow in the next few days... Update:Read the latest update on the fate of Scarborough's Futurist Theatre here...The Theatre has been granted a reprieve and will now remain open until at least the end of February... ............. Update: The final report to the council is now available hereThe report recommends a further 2 year period of operation for the theatre. Guess it's just waiting for the decision right now...? .............. Comment: By Eric Henderson Memories...I first came to Scarborough in the 1950's when the Floral Hall & the Futurist theaters were in full swing, when the top artists in the UK were performing here, it was a great shame when the Floral Hall closed & I would hate to see the Futurist go the same way, so I would like to see the theater given a facelift & help to keep Scarborough a top holiday resort.

Please Save our Futurist Theatre!

Please save our wonderful Majestic Futurist Theatre
Scarborough needs a theatre of such status - I personally have some wonderful memories of the theatre as I grew up in Scarborough - Black and White Minsterals, The Beetles and all the fantastic, variety shows.
We need a theatre to continue with Summer shows for our visitors, and would compliment our other lovely theatres - we are so lucky to have the alternative theatres, but we need one which will hold more people. We need to book popular artists in advance to attract the visitors. Previous artists always say how they have enjoyed appearing at Scarborough.
The wonderful stage performances are also well attended in the Winter - we need entertainment in the Winter to blow away the Winter Blues!! I'm sure it will be a wonderful theatre again when it is refurbished - there is a beauthful marble building under all that yellow external lagging - a crime to have it covered up.
I'm sure it will be well worth saving - we need to preserve our old Victorian buildings in Scarborough - to identify us as a Victorian Resort.
We seem to pull down our buildings of quality and replace them with "out of keeping" modern buildings. I know we have to move on, but somethings are well worth saving for the sake of our Heritage.
PLEASE SAVE OUR FUTURIST!! Yours sincerely, Lynne Cooper

Please save our wonderful Majestic Futurist Theatre - Scarborough needs such a theatre to hold our spectacular shows etc.
We are so lucky to have such a beautiful theatre.
With careful renovation, it can be restored to it's former glory. There is a wonderful marble exterior under the present cladding which is a 60s eyesore. We need to keep our Herritage to keep the character of Scarborough.
I have attended shows at the theatre for 50 yrs and still enjoy the shows.
We need live theatre - our other theatres are all excellent, but different, and the Futrist can offer entertainment where we need a larger venue.
I am in full support of saving the theatre, and would love to be involved further.
Yours sincerely. D.L. Cooper
