Scarborough Open Air Theatre - Grand Re-Opening Shows
by Charlotte
(E. Yorks)
Scarborough's historic Open Air theatre will be re-opening in the Summer of 2010...
..a grand and momentous occasion for the whole town...
Scarborough's Open Air Theatre on North Bay (North Stead Manor Gardens, Burniston Road) was originally opened in 1932 as the largest open air theatre in Europe (since Antiquity).
It was an important national venue with lavish performances, in a stunning outdoors location, with the stage dramatically viewed from across a lake.
Sadly the theatre gradually fell into decline and disrepair from the 1960's, and into disuse from the 1980's.
In the past couple of years, as part of the massive regeneration of the North Bay, the open air theatre is being renovated and is due to re-open again this summer - still the largest open air theatre in Europe!
This is a really big bit of news for the whole town, and with big names already booked, it looks sure to become a popular tourist attraction and will really help to put Scarborough on the map as a town of theatre and culture!
The Opening Show sees international stars Jose Carreras & Dame Kiri Te Kanawa with the Opera North Orchestra...
