Scarborough is like an old friend to us… Ian used to live in nearby Harwood Dale and Burniston, and went to school and Sixth form in Scarborough.
Ian’s brother and sister both still live and work in Scarborough, so we have had plenty of opportunity to visit, and explore, over the years…
Ian and I do have a lot of memories, especially with family, of Scarborough, but have definitely taken the opportunity to take in the touristy sights and sounds… after all, when we met in 1997 I was a brand new tourist to Scarborough myself.
Ian introduced me to the town, and infused me with some of his passion for his home town…
...now we can both introduce you, let you in on some unofficial Scarborough tourist information, and hope that you will soon come to love Scarborough (and the whole area) as much as we do…
Scarborough has actually got a lot to offer a visitor to the town, whether for British holidays, Victorian England holidays, weekend breaks or family days out in the UK.

About Scarborough - Tourist Information
Scarborough is a proper, old-fashioned, seaside resort - perfect for those traditional, and fun-packed family holidays by the sea…
In fact, Scarborough was the very first seaside spa resort in England – dating from the mid 17th Century. You can find out more about this in the page on the history of Scarborough.
Scarborough has:
Wide, flat, soft, sandy beaches (2 large beaches: North Bay and South Bay)
Donkey rides The donkeys are beautiful, very cute, clean and well cared for.
A fun, (slightly cheesy) sea front, with all the usual trimmings and attractions:
delicious fish and chips
yummy candyfloss, rock and icecream
interesting gift shops
fun entertainments and amusements (don’t worry, the amusements aren’t overwhelming along the front – but they are just there if you are looking for them
The headland which divides the sea front into the North Bay and South Bay is dominated by a fantastic old ruined castle. It dates from Norman times (although occupation has been detected from even earlier periods.)
View of the castle, from the town
The town itself is full of attractive Victorian architecture and real Victorian charm (ideal for your Victorian England holidays), which gives a lovely, old fashioned feel to the whole town.
Plenty of fun activities and things to see and do:
Scarborough is the ideal place for family days out in the UK. Places to visit include:
North Bay Railway (miniature railway from Peasholm Park)
Terror Tower
’Millenium’ (time travel experience)
Atlantis Water Fun Park
Scarborough Spa entertainments centre
Staintondale Shire Horse centre (nearby)
…and lots more…..
Scarborough town centre is slightly separate from the Scarborough beach front, being at the top of the cliff, (whereas the sea front is at the bottom).
It is a good town for shopping, with small shopping centres and malls. There is a wide high street with many of the major high street stores having Scarborough shops.
We always find something a little bit different shopping in Scarborough town centre than the shops in York – and usually lots of bargains - so we do enjoy coming out to shop in Scarborough for a change…
I really like Scarborough. In the Summer it really does get very busy – but it is so lovely, when the sun in shining...
... seeing jolly families holidaying happily on the beaches, enjoying donkey rides and building sandcastles with buckets and spades.
In the Winter it is much quieter, and turns into a real sleepy little seaside town, with a proper old-fashioned feel.
If you do come in winter, don’t worry – there’s still plenty open, and lots to see and do…
Scarborough is a fantastic place for traditional seaside holidays in England, and days out in the UK...
It is also a great base for a holiday, as there is so much to see and do along the Yorkshire east coast, and within a short drive of Scarborough itself.
