Scarborough Yorkshire A Visit to South Cliff Gardens
Scarborough Yorkshire - South Cliff Gardens
We visit the beautiful and peaceful South Cliff Gardens in the town of Scarborough Yorkshire...
A tranquil spot with beautiful views over the bay and town. Find out more...
We made an unscheduled stop to visit the beautiful South Cliff Gardens in Scarborough, when I spotted a glimpse of the gardens from the road...
Well, I'm very glad we stopped, or I would have missed some very lovely gardens, and a relaxing half hour spent walking around them, and looking at them...
The South Cliff Gardens have a rich heritage and history - starting at their birth as a garden in the mid 19th Century.
In the 1850's, Sir Joseph Paxton created the Italian Gardens with staircases and balustrades, amongst other features...
Further developments were made in the gardens through the rest of the 19th and early 20th Centuries, with the final design of the Italian Gardens by Harry W Smith (who also worked on Peasholm Park).
Today, the gardens are a beautiful, quiet place to stroll through, or stop and admire...

Beautiful Italian gardens with:

Peaceful Rose Gardens
Wooded areas, and slopes down to the Seafront
Birds, squirrels and wildlife - lots - the dog was particularly interested in a rather inquisitive squirrel!
Fantastic views of Scarborough - and out to sea
Lots of seating, shelters and attractive pavilions.
Towards the seafront, (low down) close to the Spa, you can also visit the Clock Cafe for tasty snacks with a view (Check if the flag is flying to see if it is open).
Cafe and nearby toilets are usually closed in Winter months.
The South Cliff Tramway is also sited at the Spa end of the gardens.
This is really a very attractive garden - a peaceful and beautiful place - I'm very glad we stopped for a look - and I hope I'll enjoy a summer visit even more!
