We had a wonderful week's holiday in these Whitby holiday cottages, based in a lovely, peaceful location at Larpool, just on the outskirts of Whitby.
These Whitby holiday cottages - ideal for self catering Whitby -are based in a purpose-built holiday complex - masquerading as a smart, modern housing estate.
Captain Cooks Haven is located on Larpool Lane (which leads from Whitby - close to the main A171 road bridge crossing the river at the top of Whitby - to the village of Ruswarp).
The park is in a lovely, countryside location, right next to the river, and the iconic Larpool viaduct.
The viaduct close to the park - now a walkway
The park is on 2 levels - we were on the top level - there was quite a steep road down (and back up!!!) to the lower level.
The lower level gets great views of the river, viaduct and any passing steam trains (North York Moors Railway).
The upper level is handy for reception and the indoor swimming pool - and also avoids the steep climbs!
There are children's play areas and shared BBQ/patio areas on both levels.
Dogs are allowed - in specific cottages only
If you are bothered which level you are going to be on, you can make a particular request at the time of booking.
We had a fast and easy check-in, with a nice welcome from reception, and a helpful location map with directions for parking, and to the cottage.
These self catering Whitby cottages are all owned by private individuals, and managed by Hoseasons.
The interiors will, therefore, differ a little, but you do have the reassurance of knowing that as they are managed by Hoseasons, they do all meet a certain standard.
We stayed in an 'Endeavour 4' self catering Whitby holiday cottage (No. 42) on the upper level. It is a nice sized cottage for 4 people, with 1 double and 1 twin. Some cottages can sleep up to 6.
The holiday cottage was all very clean, and with a modern feel- quite simply decorated, with a fresh, seaside look.
There was a large, airy lounge-diner - with 2 large and comfy sofas.
The kitchen was small, but useable, and did have everything in it we needed.
In the lounge-diner were:
plenty of books for reading
games and kids toys
a music centre
TV and DVD (Freeview was provided, but with a limited number of channels, and the reception wasn't great - we did see some of the cottages also had satellite dishes.)
There was plenty of room in the hallway for coats, boots and shoes.
There was an ironing board, vacuum cleaner and clothes-airer under the stairs.
The upstairs was nicely decorated too - all very fresh and clean!
The bathroom was lovely and clean too, with:
a small size bath
over-bath shower
sink
toilet
Master bedroom
The bedrooms were fresh, clean, and comfortable, attractive looking and with plenty of hanging space and storage.
Twin bedroom
A back door opened off the lounge, straight onto a small, individual patio area with picnic table - a nice place to sit out and enjoy countryside views - there were highland cows in the field opposite, while we were there.
Parking is in a designated (numbered) spot, quite close to the cottage (although not right in front).
We were welcomed with a pint of milk in the fridge, and a Whitby Gazette (the local newspaper).
We bought a few food essentials from the Co-op in Whitby before we arrived (located Langbourne Road - close to the Railway Station, Tourist Information Centre an harbour area - about 1.5 miles away.)
There is also a local grocery store on Helredale Road (A171) 3/4 of a mile away, although we didn't try this one.
Many local takeaways deliver to these self catering Whitby holiday cottages - you can pick up leaflets and menus in reception.
We also saw a Tesco van delivering groceries to one of the cottages - so you must be able to have your online order delivered here.
There were also a selection of leaflets for takeaways and other local attractions, in the cottage itself.
The holiday park is within walking distance of Whitby - just! Walk up to the entrance and join the viaduct to cross the river (fantastic views across the fields, and across to the Abbey!).
You then join onto a disused railway track - I think we went a bit wrong (missed our turn) and ended up coming out near the main traffic lights on the A171 junction, and it took us about 30-40 minutes walk.
I think if you take the first turn right, after the end of the viaduct (down a public footpath down the side of a school playing field) I think the way would be much shorter! Let me know if you try this route!
Bring with you to the cottage:
bath towels (bath mat provided)
hand soap
extra toilet rolls (1 provided)
washing up liquid and sponge (tea-towel and oven gloves provided)
This self catering Whitby holiday park was a lovely place to stay - convenient for Whitby, and as a base for touring around the area.
It was lovely and quiet, and very relaxing and comfortable (great sofas and comfy beds).
We enjoyed ourselves immensely, and would definitely recommend a stay here...
