All about Staithes - what it's like, where to go... Info and tips from the Unofficial Guide...
Staithes is a beautiful, old-fashioned, little fishing village, nestled right in the cliffs, north of Whitby.
I love it for it's nostalgic, old-time feel, it's quaintness and a real feeling of being totally removed from the modern world - both in time and space..!
If you approach Staithes by car, it might not seem quite so impressive at first... but don't be deterred by the somewhat mundane, modern buildings. The best of old Staithes is a hidden gem!
Park your car at the top of the village (there is a Pay and Display Car Park) and walk down towards the sea, and towards the old village.
Staithes village is as picturesque as you could hope for - beautiful old houses and fishermen's cottages, and cobbled streets leading down to the sea.
There's a small sandy beach, and a little harbour, leading into a river, where quaint fishing boats are moored. Sounds as pretty as a picture - and really is!
Staithes attracts artists by the score, and quite a little artists' community has grown up in the village. Check out some of their artistic offerings in the attractive art galleries in the old village.
You are never far from the sea in Staithes, and are always very aware of it's presence.
The history of Staithes has been much influenced by the sea - sea-front buildings have been lost to the sea on several occasions, including the little draper's shop where James Cook (who became the celebrated Captain Cook) spent his apprenticeship to the drapers...
It's not surprising that the 'call of the sea' was so insistent, and James Cook soon moved to Whitby to begin his career on the high seas.
Wander around the pretty village and harbour area, and browse for a while in the galleries and gift shops - you might find that perfect souvenir of your Staithes holiday!
No Staithes holiday is complete without a visit to the famous 'Cod and Lobster Inn' right on the sea wall.
We usually grab a bite to eat at a pretty tea room on the seafront opposite the beach. You can eat in or out - there are seats with a sea-view all along the sea wall...
