The Sutcliffe Gallery, Whitby
F.M. Sutcliffe

The Sutcliffe Gallery on Flowergate, Whitby shows photos from famous photographer FM Sutcliffe

About The Sutcliffe Gallery and FM Sutcliffe

Beautiful and nostalgic images explore a bygone age...

No visit to Whitby is complete without a visit to The Sutcliffe Gallery on Flowergate.

I'm sure you are familiar with, even if you didn't realise it, the evocative, sepia Whitby photos of F.M. Sutcliffe (Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (Hon F.R.P.S.))

FM Sutcliffe was a world famous Whitby photographer - he devoted his working life to taking photos of the ordinary life of ordinary working Whitby fisher folk - (not the usual subject matter of the time!) - making these photos into a real art form!

He built up a very good relationship with the ordinary folk of Whitby who featured in his photographs.

The famous Sutcliffe photos of Whitby were taken between 1875-1910 - they were beautiful, evocative, sepia images of Old Whitby, featuring:

  • real people
  • ships and harbour
  • old Whitby buildings, ships and yards

...you will recognise many of the locations around Whitby still.

The rights to all of Sutcliffe's 1600 images are owned by The Sutcliffe Gallery in Flowergate, Whitby.

The Sutcliffe Gallery with works of FM Sutcliffe

Downstairs

  • See prints and greetings cards of Sutcliffe's works (cards priced at around £2.50 each - correct at the date of our visit - July 2010)
  • It is well worth stopping in here for a browse of Sutcliffe's well known and lesser known works.
  • In 2009, many new, never before seen, photos were restored and displayed in the gallery, to celebrate the gallery's 50th anniversary.

Upstairs

  • Upstairs is the Flowergate Gallery with the beautiful works of gallery owner and artist Michael Shaw - see modern day fine art photos of Whitby - some very stunning!

  • The Sutcliffe Gallery, Whitby, with more modern and beautiful images of the town, too

  • Also browse the books on:
    • The Works of M. Shaw
    • The Works of FM Sutcliffe
    • Every Now and Then
  • Every Now and Then is a brilliant book - already reviewed on this site by Mike - Click here to read the review...

It contains great comparisons between FM Sutcliffe's photos, and the equivalent modern day Whitby.

Some comparisons even use the actual descendents of the people who posed for Sutcliffe - the family resemblence is still noticeable - striking in some cases!

The books, as well as the modern art photos, and of course, the iconic sepia toned photos of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe are all extremely interesting, and you really must visit the gallery if you come to Whitby...
