Beautiful Filey Bay
For us, the main attraction of Filey has got to be the beaches. Like other seasides along the Yorkshire east coast, Filey has lovely, wide sandy beaches.
One of the main attractions for us is the fact that it is extremely dog-friendly, for our retired racing greyhound - Ginger. It has steep cliffs and tall sea walls, so there is very little chance of the dog running out onto a road, or off into fields, where he could get lost...
(You have to be a little more careful with greyhounds as they can cover such a huge distance so quickly - and do seem rather prone to running off!)
Access to the beach is down steps, or down slipways at either end of the sea wall, and at various points along the whole stretch.
Taken from the southern beach, looking towards the town.
There are always plenty of dogs and their owners on Filey beach - running, playing and splashing about in the sea (the dogs, that is!!)
Dogs are permitted on the southern and northern ends of the beach all year round.
Dogs are banned from the central area (from the southernmost point of Royal Parade to the northernmost point of Coble Landing) during the summer months only (1 May to 30 September).
Ginger, our dog, does have a fantastic time running and playing with the other dogs - but unfortunately, he has such fun he goes completely deaf, and ignores us totally! Last time we went to Filey, he met a lovely black greyhound - it really was wonderful to see them running and playing together...

The beach at Filey is also a popular area for windsurfing, surfing and other water sports - so if you are into these sports, this may well be the ideal spot for you.
The beach at Filey definitely isn't just about dogs and watersports though. In the summer months it is the ideal place for family days out and fun at the seaside - old fashioned buckets and spades!
Filey Brigg and Coble Landing
At the north end of the beach, near the Coble Landing, are convenient beach huts and access to Filey Brigg...
Filey Brigg is a rocky outcrop pointing into the sea. In the summer it is a fantastic place to explore rockpools - I find them fascinating, don't you? Whole little worlds, living in a bubble of water... but take care at high tide, or in the winter months - it can get quite stormy!
View of Filey Brigg and northern beach from Coble Landing
The last time we visited, which was January, the waves were breaking over the sea wall at the Coble Landing, and little children were running towards the wall, to get splashed, and laughing... a bit chilly for that, if you ask me! :oD
The Coble Landing, at the far north side of the beach at Filey is a pretty, cobbled slipway, still with the town's fishing boats moored there - very picturesque!
It is also where you will find the Filey Lifeboat Station, which you can visit.
There are also several refreshments and snackbars here. We usually stop at the bar right on the sea front, which has seating outside, and have a nice steaming coffee, or hot dogs and chips - lovely and warming in the winter - it's always very popular...
Our favourite snack bar at Coble Landing.
There are WC facilities at regular intervals all along the sea front.
The Southern End of the Beach at Filey
There is another refreshment area at the south end of the promenade, and plenty in town. There are also refreshments available in the southern clifftop park area (summer only) reached via steps opposite the southern slipway.
We usually park at the top here, in a big car park, just near to the entrance of the Filey Golf Club. The last time we were there some people were loading horse back into their horseboxes. We often see horses being exercised on the lovely, flat sands, which stretch for miles.
To the south side of the beach at Filey the sands do actually stretch for miles. This is Filey Bay which includes the beautiful beaches at Hunmanby and Reighton - a huge expanse of flat sand, stretching right up to where the cliffs turn chalky again, near Bempton.

Depending on the spot you choose, and the time of the year, the beach at Filey, and the sands of Filey Bay, can provide you with all sorts of different activities:
quiet walks, on vast, deserted sands
fun with the dog
watersports and fun activities
rockpooling
traditional bucket and spade family fun
A visit to Filey for British holidays, or fun family days out in the UK certainly wouldn't be complete without spending some time on the beach at Filey...
