The old lighthouse at Flamborough Head

by Martin
(Manchester, UK)

I suppose the oldest lighthouse was at Alexandria and in the original 7 Wonders of the World.

In the pre lit lighthouse days clifftops often had buildings on them for navigation, sometimes these were towers or follies, but some old ones were chapels, as in Dorset on a 100m cliff.

Use google maps to have a look at the coast at Worth Matravers, near Swanage in Dorset or BBC: Click here to see.

The Chapel was built in 1100s and monks used to attend it as a lookout and put warning lights in.

Also see here for a 1300's lighthouse on the Isle of Wight.

Illuminating!!
by: Charlotte

Thank you Martin - this is most fascinating - and very good to be able to put Flamborough's story in context to other lighthouses around the country, and indeed the world.

Thanks very much!
