The Tunny, Scarborough

We were really hungry, we saw a bus drive past that advertised a really nice place called The Tunnys.

We arrived and there was one pleasent family already inside tucking into there carboard fish and chips!

Ok i was a bit wary but thought i would give it the benefit of the doubt, so i risked it and went to order our dinner.

I thought hey ho lets see what the food was like and i went to sit down on the rather cramped wooden bench and table with the tackiest plastic table cloth i have ever seen.

Then when i looked around i realised i had to go and pick up my plastic knife and fork and salt and vinegar from the table in the middle of the room. Then to my amazement i noticed that i had paid 10% extra to chuck my own rubbish in the bin. What do the staff actually do????

Then the best bit! The food we actually ordered arrived, i am pretty sure it was from the chippy down the road because i am sure i saw one of the staff bring it in through the other door.

Hey i thought i would give it a try so i opened the lovely polystyrene container that it arrived in and i was presented with what looked like something that was thrown overboard from one of the fishing boats...to be honest i was expecting more from something that cost over £10 for 2 meals!!

Just to note the chicken arrived deep fried AND looked annorexic! Worst meal EVER!!!!!

I recommend going to the nearest chippy for cheaper and fresher fish and chips and chicken!!

We had a great experience here...
by: Charlotte

Hello

Sorry to hear of your upsetting experience here - we've eaten here and thought it was absolutely great....

I think perhaps the problem may have been the expectation - The Tunny Club is a take-away fish and chip shop - that allows you to eat in (for a supplement - understandable!) in their dining/restaurant area.

They do state clearly that all food is served 'take-away' style, so if your meal tastes and appears chippy-esque, it's perhaps only to be expected!

We found the fish and chips we had to be really fresh and tasty - a great meal, and an altogether enjoyable experience, in fact.

You can read our review of The Tunny club in Scarborough, here...

Thanks for sharing your experiences - and I hope you have a better experience for your next meal out in Scarborough...

The disappointing Tunny Club
by: Dixon Family

Having been looking for an eating place we were stopped in the street by what appeared to be the Owner who was handing out 'flyers' to invite people into the 'restaurant'.

We ventured in and chose our food from a somewhat spartan menu, and the bill came to over £31 for 4 of us and a 2 year old.

When the food was served up it came in polystyrene trays with lids, and we had to help ourselves to plastic knives forks and stirrers, the fork for the Jacket Potato (which did not have butter on it) actually melted and curled at the ends.

The remaining 'meals' were over battered Spam fritters, and a small portion of Steak Pie.

All this was bad enough, but to realise we had been charged 10% extra for eating in was an additional insult as for this we would have expected to at least had China plates and proper cutlery, not the same as people choosing the Take away option.

Will never eat here again when visiting Scarborough.

Ignorant staff
by: Anonymous

Went with my wife 11 year old son & 7 year old grandson.

I ordered pie chips & gravy and asked the young lad behind the serving hatch for knife & fork - he replied very rudely, 'can't you read, they are over there'. Pie was very small portion & soggy chips

Were scabby greasy & cold. I asked for a refund & was met by a barrage of rude comments & bad language from the scruffy looking lad behind the serving hatch (nothing wrong with the f@@@@@g pie) he said the chips are crap yes but you're not getting your f@@@@@g money back.

At this stage a very nice man came in with a backpack on and asked what was wrong, I thought he was a customer helping me out because I am obviously disabled. It turned out he was the owner and he ordered the ignorant young lad to refund us for all our meals, which I thanked him for.

Plastic knife & fork polystyrene carton and a hefty £5.95p for soggy very small portion of pie chips & gravy.

Don't waste your money unless the owner has got some new trained staff in with manners. Having said all that the owner did not look pleased with the staff & I am sure he will sort them out.

Thanks for sharing your experience!
by: Charlotte

Thanks very much for sharing your experiences!

No-one needs to hear that kind of language - especially not when there are children present!!

I'm sure the owner must be very annoyed with the staff - from the owner's point of view it must be very difficult getting temporary staff in over the Summer period who will care about your business as much as you do! I think your visit is a case in point!

When we visited (during February, I think it was, so not during high season) the service couldn't have been more friendly and caring - I'm pretty sure it must have been the owner we chatted to, or certainly a more long-standing member of staff.

Let's hope The Tunny Club can get their staffing problems sorted one way or another, as we really enjoyed our visit!

Thanks very much for sharing your experiences - and I hope your next visit to Scarborough is more pleasant.

Charlotte
