The UK weather in York is typically British - but 'temperate' - this means we don't really tend to get the extremes of weather... So you are unlikely to get tropical heat in York - but shouldn't get tropical storms either. Having said that, don't be too surprised if York floods when you visit...
It is a regular occurrence, especially in Winter, and is certainly nothing to be alarmed about. It is more likely to be just a mild inconvenience for most tourists... Water creeps up gradually from the river, and floods over onto riverside paths and streets. If severe, the waters may also rise into the main streets near the river, or into residential areas.
Mostly the flooding doesn't get quite as deep as this! If ways are blocked, take notice of signs, and if you wonder why no-one else is using the end of the car-park by the river (St. George's Field) take heed and avoid likewise. You don't want to come back to a car knee-deep in river water! Rising water levels are usually forecast well in advance, and broadcast in the local media. If you have any concerns check flood warnings here... York's 'Big Flood' of recent times was in the year 2000, when the waters rose to an unprecendented 17ft 8.5ins above it's usual level. These floods did cause some considerable local disruption, and damage to properties. If you're lucky enough to be in York when the river is in flood, just enjoy the spectacle (safely!)... And be sure to check out the King's Arms Pub on the King's Staith (near Micklegate Bridge)... It famously keeps serving through the flooded waters!
The King's Arms Pub Aside from the floods the UK weather in York is fairly harmless. We get a lot of gray, cloudy and, particularly, foggy days... York is in a bit of a 'dip' (The Vale of York) so it does tend to get a lot of foggy days in Winter. You can also get snow in winter - until a couple of years ago, snow was quite a rare sight in York - but the last 2 winters (2009-10 and 2010-11) were extremely cold and snowy...
Snow - York City Walls It got down to -15 Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) which, up to now, was a rare occurrence for UK weather in York.
Snow - Clifford's Tower So, do come prepared for all eventualities in Winter! On a brighter note - quite literally - the UK weather in York can have some gloriously hot and sunny days in Summer... On a warm Summer day, follow the example of as many of the local residents and tourists as can get there, and head down to the Museum Gardens to chill-out and relax!
Ian enjoyes the sunshine in the Museum Gardens Sadly, even in Summer, it seems rainy days in York are just as likely as sunny ones... So, even in Summer, make sure you bring something warm to wear, and a raincoat and umbrella!
