The Old Granary, Castleton Whitby Holiday Cottages
Whitby Holiday Cottages Reviewed...
We had a fantastic break at The Old Granary cottage at Castleton near Whitby....
We spent one of our most enjoyable holidays of the last few years close to Whitby in holiday cottages near Castleton in the North York Moors.
This cosy holiday cottage is based around 15 miles from Whitby, nestled right in the middle of the North York Moors National Park, located on an attractive, non-working farm.
The Old Granary is a cosy, stone-built cottage, which sleeps 2.
It is in a fantastic location, approached across wild moorland, with truly glorious views from the farm and from the property itself (lounge and bedroom windows)

It is ideal for a relaxing or romantic break, getting close to nature, or as a base to explore the area.
On arrival, the cottage was beautifully presented, and scrupulously clean. The owner, Clare, had left a dining table with settings for a slap-up dinner, and tea and cake for two in the kitchen - as well as beautiful fresh flowers in the lounge/diner and in the bedroom.
The cottage is full of olde-worlde charm, with original wooden beams throughout, and beamed, sloped ceilings in the roomy bedroom (the bed was lovely and soft too - we slept very well).
Clare was very friendly and made us feel very welcome...
She'd left a selection of videos, CD's, books (novels and local travel guides and walking leaflets) to keep us well entertained throughout our stay. (Good, as the TV reception wasn't great!)
A picnic hamper was another thoughtful touch.
Handmade cards and gifts from the farm were also arranged for sale - very pretty!
The cottage enjoys a sunny aspect with south facing french doors and garden - great for sitting out in the Summer.

Look out for a friendly, but tiny, ginger cat, and inquisitive ducks, and a large and impressive cockerel.
The farm has a small herd of Belted Galloway Cattle - unusual furry cows in a distinctive black and white pattern.
You can also explore the whole farm estate at your leisure - we enjoyed a visit to the beautiful wildlife lake - but we didn't get the chance to venture much further, although there are 104 acres of woodland, pasture and even an old quarry with wildlife hide - and much opportunity for wildlife spotting.
The Whitby holiday cottages here are also an ideal base for exploring the whole North York Moors area, with Whitby just 15 miles away.
The village of Castleton is just a short distance away - drive, or walk across the fields. This is quite a large moorland village, with many useful facilities including:
Post Office
Natwest Bank
Toilets
Co-op
Newsagent
Pubs
Tearoom
Gallery
Railway station
The Danby Moors Centre is in the next village, with information about the North York Moors and walks from the centre.
The Old Granary, Scalefoot Farm, Castleton, near Whitby - holiday cottages
There are 2 Whitby holiday cottages here at Scalefoot Farm:
The Old Granary - where we stayed
Rose Cottage - next door
We were permitted a peek into Rose Cottage as we left - it looked equally lovely, with gorgeous views, and a big, woodburning stove in the lounge - think we'll maybe try Rose Cottage next time, for a change!

We had a truly wonderful few days here, in the March sunshine - and came home feeling very happy, invigorated and relaxed.
I can't wait until we go back up there for some moorland peace and quiet - I highly recommend a stay here!
