Whitby Restaurants - Bar Seven Looking for a daytime meal in relaxed and contemporary surroundings? Try Bar 7... Restaurants in Whitby reviewed - find out what we thought of our lunch here.... We had a lovely, relaxing lunch at Bar Seven - an oasis of cool calm against the heat, hustle and bustle of outside... Bar Seven operates as one of the Whitby restaurants and bars during the daytime (open 11am-3pm) serving fish and chips, meals, snacks and drinks... During the evening Bar 7 is a bar (from 7pm) serving drinks and cocktails (Adult Only for evenings - * now Adult Only all day see July 2011 update below). Bar Seven is opposite Whitby's fish market on Pier Road. It is next door to the famous 'Quayside' fish restaurant - who provide the fish and chips for Bar 7. Many people cite the 'Quayside' as having the 'best fish and chips in Whitby', and I must say, I'm inclined to agree! Bar Seven is on the first floor - go up a modern, glass, spiral staircase, and you are greeted with a smart, modern and comfortable interior - with very contemporary styling.
The bar has booths, banquettes, sofas, chairs and coffee tables, with flowers on tables, to give a very smart and upmarket feel. The atmosphere was very quiet, restful and relaxing - a real oasis of calm after the hot and busy streets outside.
This Whitby restaurant's also got great views over to the east cliff, and St. Mary's Church.
The waitress was extremely polite and friendly - very good service! Menu(Correct at the date of our visit - July 2010)
Gluten free fish and chips are available - a big plus! (* no longer on menu - see July 2011 update below) I had this, and Ian had the chicken and mushroom pie and chips.
We found the food excellent, and there was plenty of it.
Ian said his pie was 'not too heavy' and 'not runny, nice and firm, tasty, with really nice, buttery pastry'
My meal was lovely too - the fish was hot and moist, with a light, crispy batter, and good, light, chips too. We both commented that we walked away without that greasy feel in your mouth that you get from a lot of fish and chips! This was a great meal, great view, and a really relaxing atmosphere. We would definitely recommend Bar 7 - and would definitely go back! July 2011 UpdateWe returned to visit Bar 7 for lunch, in July 2011....
I had fish and chips - although I noted that the Gluten Free option was no longer listed on the menu. (The Quayside restaurant (next door) does still offer Gluten Free fish and chips on their menu). It was still quite nice and tasty, although, from memory, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as last time, I thought!
Ian had crab sandwiches, that were very tasty - we were quite disappointed to find some quite large bits of crab bone/shell and claw inside the sandwich, though... :o(
This is still a nice, smart bar with good daytime options for food - what we like best about it is, it's nice and quiet and a bit off the main thoroughfare and queueing for food! Very civilized! Children are now not permitted in Bar 7 at all (I believe they used to be permitted in daytimes) - a notice now announces that children are welcome in the family 'Quayside' restaurant downstairs (next door). We'd still definitely come again - not so sure if we'd have the crab sandwich again though!
