We review our meal out at the Luna Piena restaurant in Whitby. Very popular, and, for us, one of the best Whitby restaurants for a special occasion meal out or treat....
Find out what we thought....
We had a lovely posh evening meal out at Luna Piena - Whitby's new Italian restaurant on Skinner Street.
The Luna Piena restaurant has not been open long, (we went July 2010), but it's clearly popular - ideally, reserve a table - we arrived quite early (6.30ish) on a Thursday might in July (before the schools broke up) - and they just fitted us in with a table for 2 - most people had reserved their tables.
Luna Piena has a smart and contemporary interior, with a relaxing color scheme in purples, mauves and creams, with a lovely, striking Venice scene, captured on canvases.
This Whitby restaurant's only quite small - giving it a lovely 'boutiquey' type feel - very cosmopolitan! A great atmosphere, especially on an evening, once the candles are lit!
The waiter and waitress serving were both very polite, courteous, friendly and very professional. As we sat down, they offered to take our coats to the cloakroom.
There was plenty of choice on the menu - which changes regularly to make the most of what's in season.

I had Pollo Crema - chicken in a creamy, white wine and mushroom sauce.
It came served with a separate dish of vegetables and roast potatoes.
The meal came beautifully presented.
I chose a 'piccolo' version - 'small' - a lighter meal, about two thirds of the size of a full meal...
Portion sizes are quite large, and I found there to be plenty in the 'piccolo' meal.
My meal was gorgeous, really tasty, with succulent chicken, a creamy sauce and lovely, tender veg.
Ian had 'Pizza Piquante' - spicy pizza - with chorizo, jalapeno, chilli, mozzarello and tomato.
It was a thin crust pizza, and looked nice and crispy, with lovely, melted cheese.
Ian said it was lovely, and cripsy, but not too crunchy - it was nicely and evenly cooked - nicely spicy, but not too 'hot'.
He also ordered a side salad at £2.50, which he described as 'excellent' - especially the balsamic vinegar it was served with - very tasty and very nice.
Sadly, we were too full for desserts, so just had coffees:
as espresso
a decaff americano
Theu came with a twirl wafer - the coffees were lovely - and taste real quality.
The bill came with chocolates :o)
The Luna Piena is also open during the daytime (11am-3pm) for coffess, snacks and lunches.
There is a set price lunch menu at £10.95 for 3 courses (smaller sizes of some of the evening meals) served Monday to Saturday.
The set price lunch menu includes:

Mains:
Pork Paprika
Pollo Crema
Pizza Rustico
Pollo Napoli
Coffee
Also available are:
Bruschettas
Salads
Pizzas
Pastas
Steak
Seabass
We had a wonderful meal here - Luna Piena has a relaxing atmosphere, and lovely, contemporary surroundings.
Although busy, it's very friendly and it didn't get too noisy or overwhelming.
The staff were excellent, and very attentive.
All in all, it was a really nice up-market meal - we think it's one of the best Whitby restaurants for treating yourself or for special occasions.
