Unofficial guide to the best places to stay, eat and visit in and around the town. Find out what we thought, what we liked, and didn't - and tell us what you think....
We've only ever passed through before, and never actually stopped...
...so we really enjoyed the opportunity to stop for a while, and have a proper look around this lovely seaside town.
Withernsea is a small, seaside town, about mid-way between Hornsea and Spurn Point.
The whole area of coast where the town is situated is an area of coastal erosion, with crumbling cliffs.
It is a beautiful, very rural area, with a very flat landscape, which really makes the most of the massive and magnificent skies, and a wild, windswept atmosphere, that feels very close to nature...
It feels like a town that has built itself up like a little fortress against the wilds of the weather and nature - and, as such, it's got a real community feel.
The whole of the seafront used to be quite a soft, crumbly area of sea-shore, sand dunes and a mere (lake). You perhaps won't be surprised at the strength and solidity of Withernsea's massive sea walls - and they make an excellent place to promenade...
Sands and Seafront
For us, the seafront, and Withernsea sands, are the main attractions to this little seaside town. Find out more about:
The town itself is quite small, but friendly, with loads of small, independent stores for an interesting afternoon browsing for gifts and souvenirs.
There aren't very many chain-store types, but you will get most of the provisions you'll need, and there are plenty of choices for food, entertainment and gifts.
Should you wish for more 'serious' shopping, Hull city centre isn't too far away at all - with all the usual city centre shops.
There is also a large Tesco superstore towards the outskirts of town.
The Lighthouse
One of the most unusual and interesting features of this little town is the lighthouse. This was built before the sea defences were built, so it is about half a mile inland.
The lighthouse is easy to find, towards the northern end of the town. It is an easy walk from the town centre - just follow the main street in a northerly direction, and follow the signposts to the left.
The lighthouse is no longer operational, and is now a museum open to the public. Find out more about the lighthouse and museum
Withernsea is only a little town, but it has a quaint, friendly feel, and we really enjoyed our day out there.
It is a good alternative to the usual, busy tourist hot-spots, and is ideally placed for anyone wanting to get away from it all and indulge in rural pursuits or relaxation...
Hope you enjoy your days out in the UK here, and longer holidays too...
