Postcards of Scarborough - A.V.C. Ham
by Charlotte
(East Yorkshire)
Postcards of Scarborough - A pictorial view of Scarborough in the early 1900's
By A.V.C. Ham
I was sent this book to review free by the author - I love old postcards, and I love Scarborough so was really looking forward to receiving and reviewing it.
This is quite a small book - just 37 pages and A5 size - but the author fits in a lot of information and pictures.
The book starts with a general history of postcards, followed by information about historical postcard publishers of Scarborough.
Then we move onto postcards from a variety of Scarborough tourist locations - the photos are lovely - quite small but a quality reproduction of the original postcards, and with an authentic looking colouring.
The author also gives us lots of information and interesting commentary with bits of local interest and history added in to make the pictures and locations come alive. You will see plenty of places that you recognise well - and I'm sure some spots that you don't see any more. It's very interesting to see how the town has changed over the years - and I think you'll be surprised by how many you do recognise. I found this little book a very interesting and informative look at Scarborough, and insight into how Sarborough must have looked in it's heyday. Great for anyone interested in Scarborough, history or art, photography and postcards. Very reasonably priced too - you can get the book direct from the author for just £3.50. Every Now and Then - M Shaw and FM Sutcliffe
by Mike
(W Yorks)
I have already added this book to my review of Gibby's Cafe in Filey, but thought I would add it here too, as I think it's such an interesting read.
I first saw the book in Gibby's Cafe, but am angling after my own copy for Xmas or birthday!
The book has the old photograph taken by Sutcliffe (famous Whitby photographer) against a modern photo recreation of the same scene.
It is so interesting to see how things have changed - or in some cases, not!
So, just to say I really enjoyed this book, and can definitely recommend it
Cheers

Classic Walks on the North York Moors - Martin Collins

Martin Collins - Classic Walks on the North York Moors
I read this book while on holiday recently in the North York Moors, it was left in the holiday cottage for visitors info - very helpful!
The book contains over 30 walks, covering the whole area of the North York Moors. The version I had did have slightly dated photography, but still inspiring.
The walks were all well described, with basic, drawn maps.
The book contains not just descriptions of the walks, but also much local history and information of interest. I very much enjoyed the read, even though I wasn't intending to do any/many of the walks. I thought it was a very good source of local information and points of interest, even if you didn't want to do the whole walk. Many of the walks are around 8-10 miles long - walks range from 5 miles to 20 miles - all a litlte too far for me unfortunately! There are longer 'challenge' walks in the back of the book - 20 miles plus! These include: - Cleveland Way
- Crosses Walk
- Bilsdale Circuit
- Eskdale Way
- Esk Valley Walk
- Lyke Wake Walk
- Newtondale Trail
- Rosedale Circuit
- Scarborough Rock
- Scarborough Samaritans
- ...and more...
There is a helpful location map at the front of the book. I found this a very enjoyable and informative book, containing lots of interesting information, even if many of the walks weren't really for me. 'Coast to Coast with Wainwright' photographed by Derry Brabbs

Coast to Coast in Photos
'Coast to Coast with Wainwright': Newly photographed by Derry Brabbs
I read this book while I was on holiday in the North York Moors. I looked into this book to explore the last few walks - crossing the North York Moors to end up at Robin Hoods Bay.
This book had interesting descriptions and was beautifully photographed, with many points of interest noted.
Lots of local info, history and local 'colour' - such as interesting information about Grosmont and the NYMR, and Falling Foss.
The maps in the book were quite sketchy - it's certainly not a wayfinder map - you would also need proper maps, but these were a useful indication.
Directions were clear, but not detailed. You would possibly need more detailed directions.
Uses original Wainwright's Walks, with some updated text.
A beautiful coffee table book - inspirational photos! Ideal for fans of the Coast to Coast Walk. A beautiful, well illustrated walk - but personally not for me! Buy on Amazon:
