One of the best things about living close to the Yorkshire east coast is being able to get to the wonderful beaches...
Beaches are something this area does really well - natural, you would think, for a coastal area!
...Well, yes, but these aren't just any beaches, these are Yorkshire beaches!!
There are such a wonderful variety of beaches along the Yorkshire east coast...
To the north, around Whitby and towards Scarborough, the coast is quite rocky...
You'll find charming little bays and coves, interspersed with large sandy beaches, such as the beach at Whitby itself, and at nearby Sandsend...
Further along the coast, Scarborough has 2 massive sandy beaches - great choices for those traditional seaside holidays (but very busy in the height of Summer). More about Scarborough Beach Resort
Huge flat, sandy beaches can also be found at Filey and in the whole of the Filey Bay, which stretches for miles...
South of Bridlington the coast line changes. Gone are the tall cliffs and rocky outcrops. Instead we find low, clay clifs. This is the area of rapdily disappearing coastline, and coastal erosion...
And once again the sands stretch out for miles to the south... this is a very beautiful area (possibly my very favourite area, including our 'best beach': Fraisthorpe beach) .... soon reaching the small seaside resort of Hornsea...
The coast moving south from here, past Withernsea Sands, towards the dramatic tip of Spurn Point, is the windswept, lonely scenery of a deserted beach... Beautiful!
These are perfect places for getting away from it all - never too busy - even in the very height of Summer...
A hot summer day is the perfect time to relax on the beach and feel that cooling sea breeze...
Ian and I enjoy 2 different faces of our favourite beach near Bridlington (above and below)
In lots of ways, though, Ian and I actually prefer the Winter time on the beaches of the Yorkshire coast. We can enjoy the beauty without the crowds - and get to really appreciate the spectacle of nature!
We also like to take our retired greyhound for a run on the beach - so appreciate a quieter beach, with plenty of flat, clean sand...
Whatever you want from your trip to the beach, you will be able to find it along the Yorkshire east coast:
